"I am a part of the Windrush Generation, however my parents were not on the HMT Windrush that arrived in Tilbury, Essex on 22 June 1948.

My mother (& siblings) arrived in Southampton aboard the TN Ascania on 25 June 1958, they were four of the 567 passengers on board; that is when my personal Windrush generation history really started in the UK."

It's exactly 75 years since the Empire Windrush docked in the U.K., carrying the first 802 members of the Windrush generation — immigrants from the Caribbean who had been invited to fill the labour shortage left by WWII. Here's a look at the impact this had on British music and culture, as well as the horrific treatment members of the Windrush generation were subjected to from their arrival till today.

"The Home Office has decided not to award £150,000-worth of grants to Windrush community organisations, amid internal disagreement about whether funds should be given to groups that have expressed criticism of the government on social media.

"In December, civil servants approved applications from 15 organisations to receive about £10,000 of funding each from the Windrush community engagement fund, a grant established in the wake of the 2018 citizenship scandal.

"However, their decision was blocked by the home secretary’s private office, because advisers were concerned that two of the groups approved for funding had retweeted posts expressing criticism of the Home Office."

"Noel Gordon’s parents arrived in the UK from Jamaica in 1960. He was born six years later, then at the age of four his family discovered he had sickle cell disease.

"His parents were told there was a place for him at a special school – a state boarding school – where a matron could keep an eye on his health. It turned out to be what was known at the time as an ESN school. He suffered racist abuse and had little formal, academic education.

"“It was soul-destroying,” said Gordon. “All the things I could have learned and didn’t because there was no curriculum, there were no exams. I couldn’t punctuate, I couldn’t spell. Normally, when you go to school, year after year, you’re getting tested and you build your confidence up. I didn’t have any of that. I felt inadequate.”

"He has spent a lifetime trying to catch up, completing a range of qualifications including a degree in information systems and a PGCE, and writing a children’s book, but the stigma remains."

Waiting for the bus?

I see social-distancing already in place. 😉

Seriously though, was widespread in the UK.

Those who were invited across to fill jobs vacated by those killed in WW2, were encouraged to come, but then treated as though they were from a different planet, and lowered the tone of the neighbourhood.

So happy Veronica Ryan has won the Turner prize for her wonderful sculpture in Hackney, commissioned to honour the Windrush Generation. Always good to see - and feel - Custard Apple, Breadfruit and Soursop. Clever, beautiful, evocative, thought provoking…
