8000-year-old wines! Made a clip of all the Georgian wines I tasted in China this past year, most of them from the amber / orange / skin-contact category.

And including producers such as Askaneli Brothers, Anapea Village, Baia, Barbale and Casreli.

In a country with such a long alcohol history--the oldest known site in China dates to about 9000 years ago and involved blending rice, honey and fruit--the story of Georgia resounds. And it is fun to see so many wineries experimenting with amphora / skin-contact wine here.

Spontaneous food and wine pairing is often the most fun.

We ended up getting dumplings (jiaozi) and steamed buns (baozi) at 4 AM in Beijing -- and brought a pair of bottles from Club Dada to enjoy with those treats.

A Chardonnay-Semillon minimal intervention wine from Margaret River and a Sangiovese from Emilia Romagna. As expected, how well the wines matched was tied to what kind of dipping sauce we used, with all kinds of ratios of soy sauce, chili oil, vinegar and more.

In any case, we were diligent and finished all the food and all the wine.

Quirky wine tasting.

Three twists on Sichuan dish mapo tofu -- pizza, pasta and nachos -- with seven wines at restaurant The Rug in Sanlitun (Beijing).

The wines included three tea-infused Chardonnays from Lingering Clouds in Ningxia, a trio of Georgian wines, and one wine made with Longyan (Dragon Eye) grapes from just outside Beijing.

Collective top match: Jasmine-tea infused Chardonnay with mapo tofu pizza. Big aromas with big flavors.

Best Georgia match: Dora Rkatsiteli. This skin-contact white wine worked especially well with the cheesier dishes--the pizza and the pasta. (All three Georgian wines imported by Georgia Selections.)

My three favorite wines simply for drinking: the Longjing-infused Chardonnay pet-nat (fresh, crisp and with nice fragrance), the Dora Saperavi (a fresh supple fruity wine) and that Longyan by Clovitis (zingy lemon character).

A fun night of eating, drinking and relaxing with friends.

Still feels weird to be inside a crowded room. Today I joined the Beijing stop of ASC Fine Wine's China tour.

Nice to check out part of the ASC portfolio, including Louis Jadot, Norton, Robert Mondavi, Robert Weil, Muga, Cono Sur and Casa Silva -- I went back for a second pour of their Pinot Noir.

Just ten weeks ago, restaurants and bars in Beijing were not able to accept patrons, events were being canceled left, right and center, travel was risky, and we had to do regular COVID testing / scan QR codes to get into venues. It feels like 10 months, not 10 weeks...

I went to the Edward Hopper exhibit at the Whitney today. I've always liked Hopper, especially how he captured a certain era of New York with his use of color and light. This painting is not of New York. It is the 1909 "Le Bistro or The Wine Shop" which is a Parisian scene. The picture lacks two things...numerous people as might have been seen on a Paris afternoon and no food on the table. Wine glasses, bottles and pitchers appear regularly in Hopper's works, as do eating establishments, but hardly ever does food appear.

I stepped closer to the picture to get a better look to confirm a hunch. The two people appear to be sharing a bottle of rosé. Neither appears to be sporting a glittery "Rosé All Day" top. My guess is it was not a winery owned by a luxury goods company either.

The passion that exists within every bottle of Doffo wine originates from their Italian ancestors who immigrated to Argentina in the early 1900s. Marcelo Doffo immigrated to the United States where he started making wine in his basement. In 1997 he purchased an old cattle ranch in Temecula, California, and painstakingly prepared the soil and installed trellises and irrigation lines by hand. He then planted his first vines of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah with a small percentage of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Four years later, Marcelo was proud to introduce his first wine, calling it “Mistura.” Marcelo’s philosophy has always been that good winemaking begins in the vineyard. I braved the traffic of Los Angeles to head downtown this week. It took more than an hour and a half to drive 10 miles, which was frustrating. I arrived at the Proper Hotel in downtown LA and took the elevator to the Penthouse floor, feeling a little stressed from the traffic. I was greeted with a glass of fresh, aromatic rosé and took a look at the view in front of me and I began to relax. More wines were poured, tapas were tray-passed, and heat lamps warmed us in the fresh evening air. Tasting the wines of Bodega Colomé from Argentina with winemaker Thibaut Delmotte on the Cara Cara Rooftop at the Downtown LA Proper Hotel was the Please The Palate pick of the week.

More skin-contact white wines made in China, this time by Canaan winery just outside of Beijing.

- The Riesling has 1 month of skin contact in amphora, then 6 months of aging in old oak.

- The white blend, with Muscat, Chenin Blanc, Ehrenfelser, Müller-Thurgau and more, has 6 weeks of skin contact in stainless steel.

Both wines are fresh and floral, with that Riesling having ample lemon-y character, while the white blend's aromas dance all over the place: chrysanthemum, passion fruit, jasmine, citrus peel and more.

Anyway, I brought back one bottle of each to include in my next tasting in Beijing. Looking forward to sharing them!

The Brander Vineyard, in the Los Olivos District AVA of Santa Barbara County, focuses on Bordeaux varieties. Planted in 1975, the first wine was produced in 1977. It was Sauvignon Blanc and today, they release approximately 6/8 different Sauvignon Blanc offering in any given vintage which is why founder Fred Brander is known as the “King” of Sauvignon Blanc. After studying electrical engineering, Fabian Bravo was working in aerospace. But with a growing interest in winemaking, he switched courses. I love quirky tastings.

And simply featuring Georgian amber wines was quirky enough for many guests at a tasting in Beijing.

But then one brought an amber wine from Poland. And we had another from China’s Ningxia region. Plus, local wines made with Georgian grapes Saperavi and Rkatsiteli. And more.

We tried them at the new Peach restaurant, with Georgian wines from importer Larry Zheng.

They were a real eye -- and taste bud -- opener for amber wine novices. And it was fun to see their versatility in pairings with dishes with Mexican, Middle Eastern and Italian themes.

The story appeals, too: the idea of drinking wine familiar to people who existed before written history, as far back as 8000 years ago.

‘Orange’ wine from China. Made by Longting winery, in coastal Shandong province, using Petit Manseng grapes, wild yeast and oak barrel aging.

The label says "delicate, dense and ethereal. It is like being in the singing of birds and flowers, and the joy of living things."

Sounds like spiritual experience!

I’ve been hosting Georgian wine tastings – all amber wines – of late, so I’ll save this bottle for the next one. Always like to have a few local wines, either skin-contact or made using Georgian grapes like Saperavi or Rkatsiteli.

Anyway, this wine is more evidence of how China's wine scene is steadily diversifying. While a Cabernet / Bordeaux blend mentality is still dominant, we see an ever-growing number of grape varieties used for commercial wines and more of those wines leaning to niches such as orange, natural and biodynamic.
