⭐⭐ £5.75 Aldi UK

The Spanish sparkling wine #Cava has a long history and is just as important as #champagne Unfortunately this pink version from Aldi is not adding to that tradition. It is pretty awful and tastes of virtually nothing. The Cava industry has been trying to pull its socks up recently and promoting higher quality versions of their wines – this one isn’t doing them any favours. Don’t waste your money.

⭐⭐⭐ £18.50
Quite a rich tasting Champagne with flavours of apple, almond and honey with a lemon background. The use of mainly red grapes (Pinot Noir) causes this richness. As the grape skins are not used in the winemaking process, their colour is not added to the wine and so we have a white wine from red grapes (known as a Blanc de Noir). Lightly fizzy and a pleasant taste.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ £6 Morrisons (UK) Tesco, £7.50 Ocado
This Sauvignon Blanc has lots of enjoyable flavours that are best enjoyed from a cool bottle –so take of of the fridge 20 minutes before drinking to enjoy the banana, apricot and orange zest flavours with a background of grassiness to stop the whole thing being just sweet. A nice change from the usual New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs which are generally just one flavour of gooseberry.

⭐⭐⭐ £9 Tesco UK, £8.49 Canterbury Wines

A Californian Sauvignon Blanc that’s giving the more popular New Zealander choice a run for their money. It is expensive at £9 a bottle, but that reflects the UK price of many USA wines. Nice flavours with zingy gooseberry and lime plus creamy Brazil nut and mango. Worth a try if you can afford it.

⭐⭐⭐ £11 Asda (UK) worth seeking out to experience the range of flavours. It starts off with aromas of smoky green leaf, dried cherry and blackcurrant followed by creamy toffee and black treacle. The taste is lighter than the aroma where the fruit is plum with a liquorice and toffee edge. A nice wine.

⭐⭐⭐ £9.99 Virgin Wines (UK online)

There are two groups of sparkling Lambrusco Rosso – those that retail for around £3.99 in supermarkets and those that sell for over £10 a bottle in the posher end of the wine world through independents and online retailers. They taste the same (of cherryade and cocoa with a light fizz) and are of low alcohol (usually between 5 and 8% abv) but the more expensive one will come in a nicer looking bottle

At only 10% alcohol, this German Riesling would make a great lower alcohol accompaniment to lunch or snacks with its light and fruity flavours. There’s some lemon zing to uplift the melon and apple sweetness. A nice example of drinkable Riesling that isn’t super sweet.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ £6 and a great quaff
A good price for a good #wine that’s a great quaff at anytime. Easy drinking flavours of sweet strawberry and pineapple with some balancing redcurrant sharpness. This may be an Italian rosé made from the popular Pinot Grigio grape variety but the flavours could be from anywhere and made with many grape types as it has that world rosé flavour. But it’s a top example of one.
