Bonded Wineries in the U.S. by State, March 2023. California is a distant #1, followed by Washington State. Texas passed Oregon to become the new #3.

Mysterious eaux de vie in a shop window in Colmar, Alsace, France in June 2017. Every day when we got back from visiting #wineries, the shops were already closed.
I see that not a lot has changed in the wine industry since Roman times... 😅

We were able to do 4 wineries as walk-ins, none of which charged me a tasting fee because I was clear I was buying bottles. Very old school and I loved it.
https://www.sonoma.com allows you to select wineries that welcome walk-ins and indicates any tasting fees. Great resource.
We visited Walt and Sebastiani in town and then Imagery and Benziger on Highway 12.
I also had Mayo, Passagio, and B Wise on my list but we ran out of time on our day trip.

How often do you get to talk to someone who knows literally more than anyone else in the world about an interesting and relevant topic? I do this Wednesday at noon PDT!
Joining me for my #TablasCreek #InstagramLive will be Steve Gross, Vice President of State Relations for the #WineInstitute. He knows more about the web of laws and regulations that govern whether #wineries can sell their #wine to you, the customer, than anyone else alive. I hope you'll join us.

I gotta tell you Sonoma, it’s no fun when you have to book everything ahead of time and can’t just wing it for winery visits. I’m happy to pay for tastings and to buy lots of bottles but I’m not gonna book way ahead and spend 90 minutes plus at every winery. Any winery that is open and let’s me walk in wins!
Okanagan for the win!

It seems #wine may be reaching a tipping point on moving toward lighter glass, driven by advocacy from within (thanks IWCA Wine) and from press (h/t Jancis Robinson). I hope #wineries are doing this from a genuine commitment to #sustainability. But if not there's enormous financial incentive. At #TablasCreek I calculate that we've saves over $2.2 million over the 14 years since we moved to lightweight glass. I share the results in a new #blog. https://tablascreek.typepad.com/tablas/2023/03/need-another-incentive-to-move-to-lightweight-glass-how-about-22-million-over-14-years.html

Last summer, I was lucky enough to spend a few days touring #wineries across some of #Georgia's key wine regions, Kaheti and Kartli, as well as the capital Tbilisi.
I've written quite a few stories following the trip (Decanter and Glug), but this is the one I really couldn't wait to see published. Partly because it's my first proper #photoessay.
Here, I investigate the spiritual value of Georgia’s #qvevri and explore their power to generate new life.

Most #vineyards' clubs are all "build your cellar! celebrate with friends! etc!" but I wonder if any #wineries' #wine clubs have brutally honest membership levels:
- Basic B: we question your commitment, but will happily take your money in exchange for 3 bottles a quarter
- Gettin' Tipsy: now you're talking. 6 bottles a quarter!
- Knows How To Party: we strongly suspect none of these will be staying closed for long! 9 bottles/quarter.
- Living the Lush Life: Bottoms up! 12 bottles/quarter.
Longboard Wines' 2019 Syrah: 💯 😋 🤤 😍 🤩 🍷
(Healdsburg-area winery, if you're Bay Area adjacent. Absolute recco, they are consistently fantastic & are the only place we have so far bothered to actually join a club for shipments after we moved away!)

There’s a great thread from @weatherwest today on the likely impacts of the series of storms set to hit California over the next 10 days or so. This dramatic image shows projections of total rainfall. Those yellow swaths are more than a dozen inches of rain!
For #wineries this is music to our ears. We’re dealing with extended #drought conditions and this has the potential for a massive positive impact. Bring it on!
