Douro, Port and the regulatory system. A crisis, a rebellion, a plea for change....

But this has been brewing for a long time. Will it be different now?

How do you open an 1880 Port? Verrrry carefully. And with Port tongs. In my video here from a couple of years back, Ramos Pinto demonstrates how to use the tongs.
N.B.: The first part of the vid was truncated; it only consisted of holding the tongs in the flame to get them sufficiently hot. I was also a little inexpert in trying to pare the last part to keep this down under 2 minutes, but you'll still see the removal of the top. It just flies by fast.
Vinho Verde was a simple, fizzy and short-lived bit of plonk. There were some producers who fought back against the stereotype. There are many more now. This was one of the original stalwarts in making real table wines. The vintage is a great one in Portugal in general, but perhaps a warm one. This is not the top showing for this winery, but still good as a 12 year old Vinho Verde with plenty of life left.
The "classic" Alvarinho, often an overachiever. $21. #wine #vinhoverde #winesofportugal

When I first saw this 2009, it was a really big and very young wine. It was impressive on many levels, but I did wonder if it would hold its balance. It has evolved beautifully. It still needs a bit of air, but it became increasingly spectacular with air. All questions answered. Pintas again proves it is one of Douro's best.

Now, live at robertparker.com for subscribers a substantial Portugal report with Maçanita, Quevedo, Rocim, Fojo and more, plus--Nine Nuanced Observations about Portugal. The photo with a river is my shot of Pinhão in Portugal's Douro Valley. #photography (For those not subscribers, sorry. That's the site, but they do make things free to read after a couple of months.)

Friday, my Portugal report drops at robertparker.com with lots of big names and fancy wines, but also great bargains. I've been covering Portugal since 2006. It's steadily improved, resplendent in diversity.
One notable wine is this one, 2021 Filipa Pato Nossa Missão, from Bairrada. Pre-phylloxera 130-year vines ($160). It has one other distinction, as I am leaving the Wine Advocate, per prior announcement, and this is my very last report for them.
The last wine tasted. #wine #winesofportugal
@marianarte Well, here's a long list. It's about a year old, but still relevant and free now. #wine #portugal #winesofportugal

I keep waiting for this Syrah-dominated blend to come around, but I'm not sure it ever will. The tannins are pretty hard here. It is now at age 10. In terms of mid-palate finesse and precision, complexity and nuance, it does a great job. But I'm not sure the balance will over be quite right. About €60 in Portugal.

Elegant and holding well, this Branco has integrated its wood very well now too. This is a perfect food wine now, and in prime time. Of course, it has plenty of life left.

The first Port tonic of the year, as we head into Memorial Day weekend. You just gotta do it. Don't call it slumming, don't AT me, they are good and I like them. 😃

Portugal has so many labels. These and more (like Boavista) are for my next report, but they just keep flowing in. Don't these people know I just had knee replacement surgery? Still killing me, but back to tasting Sunday anyway. The wine is always flowing and always liquid!

The hardest thing about wine is drinking windows to me. The truth is, well stored wines fade very gradually. That means it is not a black-and-white answer, but more a line to draw as to when you think the wine is too old. Many issues there! So, it is good to go back and reevaluate things sometimes. Actuality is better than guessing. #wine #wineadvocate #robertparker #winesofportugal

Menancos
In this blend, Alvarinho, with its touch of tropical fruit and full of structure, contrasts with Loureiro and its floral notes and elegance, resulting in a lively and distinguished white wine. The moderately low alcohol content gives this wine, already so vibrant, a unique and peculiar balance.

Winemaker Antonio Maçanita called their Syrah the winery’s Barossa Shiraz (although from Alentejo). Owner Michael Brian Reynolds Mollet is a descendant of the Reynolds family, known for the English painter, Sir Joshua Reynolds, but to wine lovers for Mouchão. The labels are atmospheric. Wines like Cem Reis have gained plaudits, but they are big, flirting with 16 points, not my style. Lower-level wines are often good values and more manageable. #wine #winesofportugal #robertparker #wineadvocate

From a big vintage, this is now drinking beautifully, rounding into form. If you have some, this is a great time to open a bottle. If you have a lot, don't panic, because there is no rush. It is still rather young in its fruit profile, although the tannins have fallen off a lot. This was $53 on release, and it certainly doesn't seem overpriced. It was beautiful then, and it has justified my faith in it.

The first Rosé of 2022 for the 2023 season, for me at least, this is a blend by Fontes da Cunha of Touriga Nacional and Encruzado, showcasing the star grapes from Dão. Nicely done. It should be great this summer. $20
