Natural wine was a movement founded on noble goals and ideals - the idea of creating more honest, authentic and expressive wine. But somewhere along the line, the message has become garbled.

I increasingly see signs that the category is at risk of becoming a parody of itself.

That's why I wrote this piece for @noblerotmag magazine, issue 32 published in June. Now I made it available for everyone to read at

@marksquires Well, apparently drinking it is a powerful, if not downright sexy experience, so yes, that would count as a buy. Fine (not industrial, not necessarily $$$) wine is perhaps the most perfectly differentiated product ever created. More experience than product, in fact. So a review that describes an experience, or an aesthetic response to that experience, seems to me to convey a lot more information than a point score. I like some magic in my .

Five reviews published, ten scheduled. So many more to go it feels like I'll never catch up. But slow progress is still progress.

I'm excited to taste this lineup from Eugenio Collavini, a winery in Collio. The set includes Ribolla Gialla (two sparkling), Friulano, Refosco, Pinot grigio, and international varieties, sometimes blended.

I received them in response to my outreach for wines under 13% ABV. Two are in fact labeled 13%, but 10 — including the three reds — are twelvish.

Having visited Gravner recently, I'm looking forward to tasting quite different expressions from this region.

Insightful rumination on the implosion of Twitter and its implications for the academic community:

"any academic who has achieved a degree of popularity online can attest to the direct and indirect advantages which this has brought to their career... What if that capital is now worthless?"

Read the piece substituting your own professional community and see if it rings true. I certainly does for me.

I love this piece!

It's especially timely because I'm developing a panel session for Unified Symposium in January about wine lexicon, and this article touches on so many of the same issues we face in wine discourse.

What a pleasure it was to speak to ' Josh Greene today for my Instagram Live. I always appreciate Josh's thoughtful approach to ... and loved what he had to say about the value (and risk) of tasting blind. If you missed it, it's archived at instagram.com/p/ClmWoRvBPLx/

"At the same time, it would be idle to deny there is plainly a marketing element to it all; the lyrical language telling drinkers — then as now — what we want to hear about our wines."

I spent my day finalizing an illustration for the cover of the next volume of magazine Trink. I'm excited to have my wine illustration out into the world.

Wine people in the trade! 🥂 🍷 (producers, PR/marketers, importers, yada):

For a feature story, I'm seeking wines under 13% ABV. Red wines are particularly needed, but white, rosé, orange, and fizz also welcome.

Submissions ideally to terroirreview.com/contact/ or drop a reply in the thread.

Thank you!

The new issue of Trink Magazine has landed, and I've got a piece nominally about a late-harvest Gewürztraminer but mostly about miners and villagers, vine growers and winemakers, coops, borders, tradition, and invention.

Long shot, but thought I’d reach out anyway: Anyone here expert in the language of food and food lexicon, specifically wine lexicon, and the ways these can be gatekeeping? I’m leading a panel on this topic in January and seeking experts and resources. Thanks!

‘I always thought wine was really snobby, and never understood what tasting notes were all about,’ said @ WKDgirl. ‘But seeing something described as plum, raspberry, smiley face, thoughtful face’ it suddenly all makes total sense.’
