It began as an event for locals which was held in July, after the real snow arrived. As sponsorship grew it became more of a corporate branding exercise, complete with TV coverage, loads of B-celebs and hangers on.
On low snow years they'd truck snow from the Remarks to Coronet base so the suitcase races looked good on TV.
I can't see locals being upset that it's gone.
