According to Pliny the Elder (that 'friend' of Fabulous Folklore), snow that has lain for a while was filled with large, hairy white-reddish grubs that seemed to be asleep.

Although this Soviet adaptation is inspired by Pyotr Tchaikovsky's ballet, it more closely follows E.T.A. Hoffmann's 1816 novella 'The Nutcracker and the Mouse King'.

In many homes across Europe & Scandinavia, it just wouldn't be Christmas without this DEFA/Czech classic:

The English folklore character of Old Father Christmas represents the spirit of Christmas - I love this illustration -the holly crown, wild hair and pagan yule log, the spiced wassail punch bowl. A very old man with a youthful magic glint in his eye #Winterfolklore #folklore

'The Wild Hunt' image occurs in folklore across Europe - wailing ghoslty souls in a hunt across winter skies, said to be led by a figure such as Odin (providing very tenuous claims of links with Santa Claus). #FaustianFriday #GothicAdvent #WinterFolklore

The Basque winter gift-giver, Olentzero, has several origin stories.
In one, Olentzero was abandoned as a newborn and found by a good fairy who granted him powers. He grew into a kind and helpful man, but he died running into a burning building to save children trapped inside. Touched by his selfless sacrifice, the fairy brought him back to life. He continues to practise generosity by bringing gifts to children.
In another, an old man saw an omen that prophesied the birth of Jesus. Unwilling to learn a new religion, the old man went to the Jentillak, a race of giants, and asked them to throw him off a cliff so he wouldn't have to deal with Christianity. The Jentillak did so, but all of them fell off the cliff themselves in the process, except for Olentzero. Stuck in the age of Christianity, he embraced his fate and distributes gifts to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
