The woodstove can’t keep
up. Only a little
halo around the firebox
is truly warm. No
insulation in the walls,
and the windows, fogged
with condensation from my kettle,
drip down the rotting
sills. I’m wrapped in blankets.
Hooded like some stranger
with a scythe, I hover
by the stove and sip
Red Zinger. Occasionally,
I poke the embers with a stick.
Along the road, the power
lines grow crystalline
with ice. I haven’t tried to start
my pickup truck all
week.

a haloed lamppost
interrupts the snow, tethers
all of existence.

Quivering, feathered limbs
cast up a murmuration.
Tree branches, now bare,
spider across the gray sky,
weaving and webbing upward.
Trunks may serve as charnels
for walnut shells,
the shade of a bird,
caps of acorns,
and desiccated leaves.
But inside, trees remain rivers,
flowing witnesses to winter.
They are most alive now:
still and waiting,
a resting awareness,
with tangled limbs
rooted in the sky.

follow me to the maple forest
dusted in fresh fallen snow
to stillness
to silence
where air bites
the tip of your nose
we’ll tap sap
from xylem
in the slow flow of life
one drop at a time
there’s no hurry here
this is how
we find sweetness
in the dead of winter

Adelaide Crapsey's legacy is the #Cinquain or the five-lined unrhymed stanza form. She was inspired by the #Haiku.
Adelaide loved the #Simplicity and #Power of Japanese #Poetry.
Her best Cinquain is #November #Night:
Listen...
With faint dry sound,
Like steps of passing #Ghosts,
The #Leaves, #Frost-crisped, break from the #Trees
And #Fall.

And now we have it!
Every wish comes true!
We are alone now in a fleecy world;
Even the stars have gone.
We two alone!

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a #flower;
But only so an hour.
Then #leaf subsides to leaf.
So #Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing #gold can stay.
Robert Frost 1874-1963

#Fall, #leaves, fall; die, #flowers, away;
Lengthen night and shorten day;
Every #leaf speaks bliss to me
Fluttering from the #autumn tree.
I shall smile when #wreaths of #snow
Blossom where the #rose should grow;
I shall sing when night's decay
Ushers in a drearier day.
Emily Brontë

The Little Purple Aster waits till very late,
Till the flowers all have faded from the garden gate.
Then when the world is dreary, her buds have all unfurled,
They seek to cheer the everchanging, somber autumn world." - S. C. Stone

The #Autumn has tinged the #trees with gold,
And crimsoned the #shrubs of the hills;
And the full #Seed sleeps in the earth's bosom so cold;
And hope all the #Universe fills.

Though summers change and pass away -
Though dies the beauty of the hill and plain -
Though warmth and color fade each autumn day -
Hope passes not, and abides to say
That our brightest joys shall all come again.

May we be blessed with:
A little sun,
A little shower,
A tiny seed
A garden flower.

Alone on the slope of the mountain, it grew,
And bathed its light tresses in glittering dew
The bird on its boughs lingered loving and long,
And the stream at its feet ever murmured in song
It toyed with the winds, it was happy and free;-
Oh! the silvery birch was a flourishing tree.

November is a spinner
Spinning in the mist,
Weaving such a lovely web
Of gold and amethyst.
In among the shadows
She spins till close of day,
Then quietly she folds her hands
And puts her work away.
