Winter gets in through a crack in the window
we can’t figure out how to patch.
The screens are old
but too expensive to replace, so we stuff
a towel against the sill and shiver into each other.

In these quiet months, we lie dormant,
secluded in silence, exercising caution.
We talk with surgical precision,
careful not to stir the hurt we have nursed.
It’s been this way for months––this familiar cold.

Give me the hush
of a pillowed January morning,
snug as a fur-robed ermine
in its muffled den.

With another Christmas stored
in photographs
cookies in the freezer
boxes in the attic
and an extra pound or two on me,
December’s pressures
melt from my shoulders
like butter in hot buttered rum.

Cocooned in fleece,
I sink into my tufted mushroom chair
with a mug of hot chocolate
and a book I won’t finish till spring.

Last night's reading. I loved the Joan Aiken - original entertaining fairy tales. I don't know why I hadn't read it before! A German Christmas was a fun read but there's no history or introduction to the excerpts which would have made it a more interesting read. Lovely cover tho.

I'm in the middle of listening to Meet Me Under the Mistletoe by Jenny Bayliss, and I'm really enjoying that it's more winter vibes vs. jamming holiday spirit down your throat.
