Here is a list of winter survival gear for travel in extreme cold. This list should be adjusted for your area or where you are travelling, you can pick from it what works for you. Assuming your car will work properly and always be warm, is the worst thing you can do. Accidents, break downs, road closures all can be lethal if you are not prepared. Remember, a car will get very cold very fast when not running. If you are idling for heat, remember to check exhaust for snow or ice build up. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer.
Winter survival car trip list:
Minimum of 3/4 of a tank of gas to start.
Taking a thermos of hot water with you when you leave. (fill with boiling water before you leave)
Get a small, safe source of heat (like a Mr. Heater buddy)
Portable jump starter for your car battery.
A backup charger for your phone and devices.
Insulated bags to keep your devices in so they won’t freeze.
Flares.
Mylar blanket.
At least one heavy wool blanket.
Car electric blanket.
Self-heating meals.
Small camp stove with pots to heat water, snow or food.
Candle in a heat proof can or jar.
Extra boots with insulated insoles.
Boot ice grips.
Extra mittens/gloves.
Hand and feet warmers.
Multiple layers of clothing, fleece, thermal underwear, wool, down.
Shovel.
Head gear.
Flashlight and headlamp.
Lithium battery powered marine flashlight with flashing mode.
2 traffic cones or triangles.
Animal safe ice melt and/or traction sand or chicken grit.
Bear spray. (especially for remote mountain roads)
Empty small jerry can. (best to not carry gasoline inside the vehicle as the fumes are poisonous)
Hatchet.
Jug of windshield fluid.
Fire extinguisher within arm's reach.
Collapsible shovel.
Reflective tape (for inside trunk lid, doors, etc. if you pull over in the dark to get out or open the trunk)
Car repair tools.
