Intrusion into the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant

The wolf in the clearing clears the space
or worse, deliberate incest-paved path.
Danger is an emanation of energy
and growls and bites. The revelations
of meditations on the wood substantially disturb this place.

Metal and dripping death.
The palms of the lupines do not grasp or gesture.
The danger unleashed is of a riparian nature.

The danger is in a particular location.

Intrusion into the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant

Using cut-up technique, I combined fragments of my existing poetry with selections from Expert Judgment on Markers to Deter Inadvertent Human Intrusion into the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. You might know it form all those “This is not a place of honor” memes. By volume, this poem has much more of my poetry about wolves and coyotes than warnings about nuclear waste, but a little nuclear waste goes a long way, as we all know. This poem was first published in Rigglewelter #14 on October 2018.

"Two meetings on nuclear waste were held in New Mexico this week, on different sides of the state with very different reactions from attendees.

On Tuesday, a townhall-style meeting was held in Santa Fe which more than 300 persons attended and about 200 participated online.

Most expressed fears and concerns that a federal plan to transport surplus #plutonium to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad would endanger local communities along the transportation routes.

The next night at a meeting at the city golf course in #Carlsbad, about 30 business leaders, elected officials and invited guests took a much warmer tone with the federal government and its plans for New Mexico and the nearby #WIPP site."

"State officials on Tuesday released a draft permit that includes tougher provisions for the U.S. government to meet if it wants to continue dumping radioactive waste from decades of nuclear research and bomb-making in the New Mexico desert.

Currently, the subterranean landfill carved out of an ancient salt formation is licensed to take transuranic waste, or waste generated by the nation’s nuclear weapons program that is contaminated with radioactive elements heavier than uranium. The drums and special boxes entombed there are packed with lab coats, rubber gloves, tools and other contaminated debris.

Steinborn noted that New Mexico also is grappling with contamination from past uranium mining...and the use of toxic firefighting chemicals known as PFAS at air force bases around the state."
