Specifically, #Wiscon, the intersectional feminist SF/F convention I love, is taking a gap year to reorganize and recruit. (We need to operate without burning people out like fuses at Christmas.)

But that is NOT what I want to recruit you for!

At #WisCon last weekend I found myself wondering what was my first WisCon. I have kept every con badge, so it was easy to find: WisCon 2, 1978. ("Melior" was my badge name at the time.)

#WisCon taking a year off and #HotNozzleSummer having to cancel this summer's event are symptoms of the same crisis of care we are all under. Creating safer places for marginalized people to do meaningful things like talk about SF&F or #rocketry is real work, but the owners and bosses steal and appropriate our labor under threat of violence and there's nothing left for care work.

#WisCon was gorgeous and joyful and I'm so glad we were able go make it up here after all this time. Our tiny human greatly enjoyed the kid space and spouse and I had great times at panels and geeking out with old and new friends. Queer joy is healing.

When Sumana gives you (or, well, to be honest, your juggling circus kid) lemons, I guess you take them back home halfway across the continent and join them with your own backyard lemons and make Otherwise Lemonade...
