I'm making a graphic novel. A first for me. It will be based on all of the Witchflowers comics from Inktober/Comictober 2021 onward. There are lots of little story beats that this prompt-based version missed that I'm now going back and filling in. I may also completely redraw the existing pages as well — depends on if they still fit with the new material.

The prompt for this comic was "stuck."

One might think that writing a story from word prompts would make the task more difficult, but I disagree.

Writing from prompts is WAAAY easier than starting with a blank page. A prompt imposes limitations — limitations that one must creatively overcome.

The only thing I like better than to write using a word prompt? Using TWO word prompts.

The past week, I've been sharing comics from my series, #witchflowers.

This comic, like the others I've posted, was inspired by a word prompt — in this case, "sour."

Building a story out of random prompts lead me into creating a series that I NEVER would have made otherwise.

A fantasy series about witches? With gentle, silly humor?

I didn't know I had it in me.

But I was having too much fun to stop now.

Authors talk about their characters taking on a life of their own — I hadn't experienced anything like that until #witchflowers.

It was nerve-racking to write these comics with no idea what might happen next. I would try to plot out the story only to have the characters come through and make a mess of everything!

The spell was supposed to break. I was surprised when it didn't. The prompt of the day was "watch."

Last week I introduced #witchflowers, I comic series I created in October 2021 kinda by accident.

As I was challenging myself to try to make a new comic for every day of the month (and already behind), there just wasn't a lot of time to think about what I was making. And definitely not enough time to indulge in one of my favorite "hobbies" — *overthinking* about what I was making.

The prompt was "boogeyman."

The #inktober2021 prompt for the day was "raven," which I used to craft this little scene.

I didn't write it thinking I'd continue the story of this encounter the next day. In fact, I was really resistant to the idea — trying to tell a story through Inktober prompts?! Madness!

The prompt was "hex" from the #comictober2021 list.

I wasn't thinking of the #witch as a character yet, but some readers made it clear they were already invested in the kind, gentle witch they'd seen in my comic the day before — this witch was too mean.

Hmm.

Sometimes you figure out what something *is* by figuring out what it *isn't.*

I'd like to introduce a project that I'm particularly proud of — Witchflowers.

The series grew out of a comic I made for the day 1 prompt of Inktober 2021 — "crystals."

It was supposed to be a one-time thing, but the comic got such a strong reaction on Insta that I made another comic w/ the same witch the next day. And, well... things kinda of snowballed from there.
