When I first had the idea for my #witchpunk book four years ago I thought I would set it in the near future or alternative present for some classic cyberpunk dystopia vibes.

But now that I'm actually writing it, it's set in modern day. Admittedly so you're not contending both with a sci-fi setting and the added magic at the same time, but also because *gestures vaguely at the world at large*

Handwriting my novel and not having an outline means I have no idea how much I've written or how close I am to being done.

But I just finished up notebook (traveller notebook with 128 pages each) number 5, and #EmpathAndAugur was about that length. There's a lot more other stuff mixed in to #witchpunk so it'll probably be longer than that but we're getting there.

@ossifog It's also of special note to me as I've been writing my #witchpunk book. At the start I asked my witchy friend for a magic book to do some research and she refused and told me to find one for myself.

I think I read the free samples of at least half a dozen and none of them seemed to fit. But #BraidingSweetgrass really spoke to me. It's not a witch book, but it is a lot about the inherent energy of living things. I think it might be that book for me.

I had an idea that might be kinda weird but also kinda cool:

In my #witchpunk book sometimes magic shit happens, but at the moment it's not super obvious when someone is being bewitched. It's probably something I could brush up in the editing pass, but I could also...

...switch to the present tense for the duration of the spell. That would make it really obvious something different is going on.

Shared my not even a first draft of the first part of my #witchpunk with the partner. he says he likes it a lot! but he's also contractually obliged to say that.

first part is the locked room / no internet murder mystery, and only the barest hints of magic. still working on what comes next.

For my #witchpunk book I was running into issues due to the lack of an audience stand-in. Ash (protagonist) has isolated herself both from her tech and witchcraft communities, so there's not no one around for her to explain what's going on.

Got around it by concurrently telling the story of her teaching magic to Lucine, her friend and the antagonist. But there's some stuff that can't quite get told this way, which I'm hoping falls on the "mysterious" side instead of "confusing"
