Back in the early days i learned a lot about what reporters were going through on twitter via some open chats that #hashtags enabled.
#wjchat was an amazing window into a bunch of early folks exploring a space together. It's how i met @webjournalist @acnatta and a lot of other folks.
@siw Great thread Steven, thanks for posting. I am here for the community sharing ideas and best practices. That was the culture in the old socjourn Facebook Group and #WJCHAT, both of which played an important role in my transition from print to digital and in finding my #journalism community. I haven’t really been able to find that the past few years, but it’s the vibe I get here. I want to do everything I can to encourage it and stay positive. #Mastodon
@webjournalist I’ve been thinking a ton about #WJCHAT as I’ve learned about the journalism community on Mastodon. Some of the discussion happening here have similar energy. Also, hi!
#TwitterEulogy I have made countless incredible friends because of that platform. I live tweeted my son’s birth (to no one… it’s a slow, long process). I co-founded #WJCHAT. I launched #JOVRNALISM. I can say my career changed because of the platform. 🫡

#introduction: I’m Ian Hill, and I’m the senior manager for digital audience development at TEGNA, America’s largest independent broadcast company. Like you, I’ve been following what’s going on at Twitter closely, and I’m interested in learning more about Mastodon. I also miss #wjchat and hope to see a similar community grow here. Most of what I’ll share here will probably be about social and journalism.
