A garden has to stimulate the senses not only when everything is flowering. The “riot border” is already unruly and beautiful. It will be very colourful very soon.
Some plants I deliberately put there, others are self seeded.
Incorporating wildflowers (weeds) in borders is ecologically important but it’s not new or revolutionary.

A bit hard to spot, look at the centre of the photograph: A pheasant investigates my greenhouse. He has been almost permanently living in the garden for several weeks.
I suppose he calls himself wildlife!

Earlier in the spring I noticed two clumps of self-seeded Woodland Forget-me-nots (Myosotis sylvatica) in different parts of the garden.
They arrived on the wind and decided to stay. They have both chosen very good spots, where they fit in well with neighbouring plants.
I love weeds. They are an integral part of my planting.

Internal temperature of my compost heap this morning, after cold nights and much rain, just over 45°C. Happy with this at this stage.
On the surface grass cuttings from a week ago, cuttings from the garden, deadheads and kitchen 'waste', such as vegetable cuttings, peanut shells, egg shells and coffee grounds.

When the ducks nest was still active, I was noticing pigeons sitting where the nest was. Were the pigeons not aware of the nest and was it coincidence, were they curious or perhaps even protective when crows, who can raid ducks nests, came too close?
Guesses anyone?

Three male ducks on our roof, all waiting to catch a glimpse of their favourite female. Last year there were five at one point.
Meanwhile, "our" pheasant is becoming a fixture rather than a visitor. This morning he was drinking out of the small water features sunken into the patio, ignoring the much larger pond.

Slowly, ever so slowly, colours return to the garden. The height of later months is still missing. It is easy to forget how slowly spring gets going.

A small, wild, natural patch at the front of my property, next to the road. I don't do anything apart from cutting it to the ground once a year. It is so wild and beautiful. The bluebells are getting better every year.

This early flowering shrub—a Flowering currant or Ribes sanguineum—is an extremely important early food source for many different types of insects, nut just the pretty bumblebees.
It is really important that we support the insects in our gardens. The loss of species and numbers that we have already caused is frightening.

Weekend. Here they come: Humans attached to petrol-driven lawnmowers, hedge cutters, strimmers. Mindless obsession with tidying. What an odious farce!
The overly tidy, neat, manicured garden is the death of nature. It deprives wildlife of space and it is also very boring.
Let’s make our gardens overflow with nature.

The Spiraea xcinerea ‘Grefsheim’, which I planted almost to the day a year ago, is doing really well and seems to love, where I planted it. In this photograph it poses with a group of daffodils.
