"Tossed by the Wind," Emily Carr, 1939.

Emily Carr was one of Canada's greatest artists. Early in her career she was famous for her paintings of remote forests and indigenous communities, some of which are still remote. In the early 30s she began more conceptual works around natural subjects, of which this Expressionist canvas is an example.

"Still Life of Peaches on a Fruit Stand with Flowers," Fede Galizia, early 1600s.

It's peach season! In honor of the orchards I drove by this weekend, here's some produce. Fede Galizia was an Italian painter, whose specialty was still lifes of fruit. Like many women artists of the era, she's unjustly forgotten except by scholars, despite her influence on later art.

"Paint Box with Nude Study," Helena de Kay, c. 1871

I love this, a great example of how a simple object can be great art. I don't think de Kay meant for this to be art; I get the feeling she simply did this as an idle study while at one of her classes. BUT...the end result is both beautiful and delightful.

"Portrait of a Woman with Red Hair," Juana Romani, late 19th Century.

Italian-born, Romani started as an artist's model and then became an artist herself, noted for portraits of women. Her career was brief, just over a decade; she had mental health issues that required hospitalization and she died young, and sadly forgotten.

"Basket of Plums," Louise Moillon, 1629.

Plums are one of my favorite fruits, and are coming into season, so I'm marking the occasion. Moillon was a Baroque-era French painter of still lifes, highly praised in her time as her work was purchased by King Charles I of England. Her skill is evident here!

"Flowers in Front of a Window," Suzanne Valadon, 1930.

Valadon started as a model for folks like Renoir, but became an acclaimed artist in her own right. Never sticking to any one style, she became noted for her nudes that expressed the female experience in Western culture; look up her "Abandoned Doll" for an example.

From the National Gallery in Prague.

@TheWildGees Frömel's Moon and Hill from 1971 in the IMMA Collection is a beautiful work. The alabaster sculpture has been displayed close to the natural light from the Royal Hospital's large windows. Sunlight can slightly illuminate the semi-permeable circular indentation in the stone. "Still Life with Watermelon," Sarah Miriam Peale, 1822.

Peale was a local gal, operating out of Baltimore, and was known for her portraits and still lifes, of which this is considered the pinnacle. She is regarded as the first American woman to succeed as a professional artist. Just look at that watermelon! This is a perfectly seasonal tableau.

"On the Beach," Ethel Carrick Fox, 1910.

An English Impressionist, Fox spent most of her time in France and later Australia. This was probably painted in France and most likely is of the French belle-epoque upper-middle-class enjoying a day at the seaside. Fox did many beach paintings at this stage of her career.

"Orange-red Auricula with Gooseberry Harlequin and a Spinning Caterpillar," Barbara Regina Dietzsch, 18th century.

Dietzsch was a member of a family of artists in Nuremberg; with a group of female artists there, she practiced a type of contemplative, almost scientific, botanical drawing style that was highly valued at the time. This is, in fact, a drawing, but was valued as highly as painting in its day.

From the Städel Museum, Frankfort, Germany.

While Georgia O'Keeffe painted some shells & skulls along with her many flowers & landscapes, living animals show up very rarely in her work. This is easily the best of those exceptions! 🐮

"Landscape with Cows," Helen McNicoll, 1907.

A Canadian Impressionist, McNicoll helped popularize Impressionism in Canada and became one of the most prominent Canadian artists of the early 20th century. Sadly, she died young, 35 y/o, of diabetes, only 8 years after this was completed.

But what a perfect summer scene!
