"The Garden Parasol," Frederick Carl Frieseke, c. 1910.
American-born Frieseke was a student of the Impressionists but eschewed their passion for landscapes and instead focused on his two main fascinations, light and women. His paintings have a remarkable technique, but are also quite male-gazey, if you get my drift.
But that parasol rocks.

"Relaxing in the Shade," Yamakawa Shuho, c. 1933.
A beautiful little painting; the unusual scalloped edge is a great way of indicating they are in an umbrella's shadow. The style is unmistakably Japanese but it depicts the growing influence of Western fashion in Japanese society.

"Summer Delight," Anders Zorn, 1886.
Anders Zorn was a noted Swedish painter, here depicting his wife on the pier and a friend approaching in a rowboat. The depth of detail is amazing when you realize this is done in watercolors, not oils. This shows influence of French Impressionism but mixes it with Scandinavian austerity for a unique style.

"Elizabeth Peyton Stanton," Lucy May Stanton, 1922.
Georgia-born Lucy May Stanton was one of the noted woman artists of her time, and was sometimes dubbed "the Fragonard of the New World" by the press. Independent and unconventional, she is best remembered for a series of miniature portraits, of which this is one.

"Beautiful Woman Reading a Book," Uemura Shōen, 1941.
Uemura was a woman in a very male-dominated profession in Japan, but she succeeded in painting women who were not merely beautiful & laid out for the viewers' delectation, but women with real souls & personalities going about daily activities. She didn't want to paint a woman who was just beautiful but who had other things going on.

@datacequia @connect_science You can also make concerted efforts to follow people- I got tired of finding only men in my feed and started following and boosting only women for some time; that took time to make a difference, but eventually my feed was populated by #womenInScience and #WomenInArt
"Katerina," Taras Shevchenko, 1840.
Shevchenko was an artist, poet, folklorist, and public/political figure in Ukraine. His works are considered the foundation of modern Ukrainian literature and language. This painting shows a scene from his poem "Katerina," where the heroine, representing Ukraine, turns away from a deceitful, controlling lover, representing Russia. Prescient, eh?

"Nordic Summer's Evening," Richard Bergh, 1899/1900.
I love how their bodies are turned toward each other, but they're both looking away....what's going on? The models are known; the woman is singer Karin Pyk, and the man is Prince Eugen of Sweden and Norway, although they were painted in at different times. Simultaneously restful and enigmatic, sadly overlooked.

"Young Woman at her Toilet," Titian, c. 1515.
I could never quite get used to the idea of the term "toilet" being used to doing one's hair, but I guess that's due to me being a child of the modern age. This is a bit mysterious; what was the purpose? Some point to how he's showing her from multiple angles with the mirrors, but I notice that she's not noticing the man helping her or acknowledging him at all. Technical exercise, or commentary on class?
From the Louvre, Paris.
