@tarajdactyl
I don't think people realise how important stuff like this is, women were in at the start of the computer revolution and were incredibly important to it, but you would not think so from most of the images that were printed about it, they only showed men. It's good to see more women joining the field and more acknowledgement of their place in its history.

I actually asked about the role that luck plays in an industry career vs an academic career. Prof. Hoda corrected me, and said that it was more appropriate to talk about "opportunities" than luck. I think she has a point there.

Still, I feel like part of our success comes down to luck, and particularly the part of being born with a certain gender/ethnicity/neurotype/(dis)ability/citizenship/etc.

@ednl should probably have added or something.
My previous research group was also called Ada. I guess if we keep naming things after the same woman, this might be an indication that we do need more , if only to sniff confusion 🤷‍♀️

After the last coffee break I needed to talk to a colleague, so I missed most of the last session.

Thanks to the organisers and the speakers for sharing their insights with us!

Anyway: what I like about prof. Hoda's point is that academia can be a bit of an ivory tower bubble, and "real" questions from industry can really ground, guide and inform your research.

In almost each talk, the speaker reflects on what they like to do. I'm both surprised and relieved that none of them mention their actual field.

Prof. Rubin likes writing papers.
Prof. Chechik likes talking with and learning from others.
Prof. Suhendra likes creating good presentations.

I love the title of the next talk: SE Career as a Function of Your Degree and Personality, by prof. Vivy Suhendra.

"CS is developing so fast, that what we study is less important than the skills you learn while you study it. However, there is overlap between what you learn in undergraduate studies and what we'll eventually do at work."

Prof. Chechik talked about the differences between academic research and industry research. She gave some examples of times where she collaborated with industry, while still being able to do academic research.

I loved her outlook on supervision. Her research directions are in large part informed by the curiosity of her students.

Next talk is by prof. Rubin's PhD advisor: prof. Marsha Chechik. She's talking about academic research (next talk will be about industry research).

Very excited to be attending this talk by prof. Julia Rubin. She will talk about the time she spent in industry, as well as her experience in academia. I'm thinking about my future career and whether I want it to be in academia and/or in industry, so I'm looking forward to hearing her insights.

I'm attending the Ada Workshop at the ACM Joint European Software Engineering Conference and Symposium on the Foundations of Software Engineering (ESEC/FSE) today.

Today we will hear talks and panel discussions on the topics of research, career, and being successful.

John von Neumann’s wife, Klára Dán, asked him to put a picture of an elephant in his book “Theory of Games and Economic Behavior”. He complied, hiding one in plain sight in a set theoretic diagram.

There’s reason to believe Klára’s code was the first modern-style code ever to run on a computer.

You can dive into Klára’s life and work by listening to season 2 of “Lost Women of Science” podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/
