Il y 133 ans mourrait Marianne North (1830-1890). A 40 ans, elle se met à voyager et à peindre la flore des zones qu'elle visite. Au lieu de peindre des spécimens isolés, elle peint les plantes dans leur milieu donnant ainsi des informations différentes de celles qu'on trouve habituellement dans des illustrations scientifiques. Elle a participé à l'élaboration de la célèbre expérience de la poupée qui démontre que très tôt les enfants noirs intériorise les stéréotypes négatifs liées à la couleur de leur peau. Elle a passée toute sa carrière à s'occuper de la santé mentale de ceux-ci.

Eunice Newton Foote was the woman who discovered the greenhouse effect in 1856. She was a scientist, inventor, and women’s rights activist who conducted experiments on the effects of sunlight on different gases. She found that carbon dioxide trapped more heat than air, and predicted that increasing its amount in the atmosphere would cause global warming. newscientist.com/article/23827

One of five portrait roundels on the Glasgow Stock Exchange building on Buchanan Street.

Attributed to John Mossman, it depicts a woman doing science, something unremarkable today, but when it was built in the 1870s, science was an almost completely male field of study. I can't say for certain, but it must be one of the earliest public representations of a female scientist.

Susan Jocelyn Bell Burnell DBE FRS FRSE FRAS FInstP (née Bell; born 15 July 1943) is an astrophysicist from Northern Ireland who, as a postgraduate student, discovered the first radio pulsars in 1967.

The discovery eventually earned the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1974; however, she was not one of the prize's recipients.
