The experimental physicist joins us to talk about her book Not just for the boys, why we need more women in science.
Eunice Newton Foote was the woman who discovered the greenhouse effect in 1856. She was a scientist, inventor, and women’s rights activist who conducted experiments on the effects of sunlight on different gases. She found that carbon dioxide trapped more heat than air, and predicted that increasing its amount in the atmosphere would cause global warming. #climatechange #womeninscience #history https://www.newscientist.com/article/2382758-eunice-newton-foote-the-woman-who-discovered-the-greenhouse-effect/

One of five portrait roundels on the Glasgow Stock Exchange building on Buchanan Street.
Attributed to John Mossman, it depicts a woman doing science, something unremarkable today, but when it was built in the 1870s, science was an almost completely male field of study. I can't say for certain, but it must be one of the earliest public representations of a female scientist.
