One negative thing that really stands out at this is how heavily male-dominated it is. We're at around 90% men among the invited participants, which is not representative of the dark matter community. Conference organisers really need to do better. It's 2023, why do we still need to have this conversation?

For day 9: heart, it’s trailblazing American Marie Maynard Daly (1921-2003), 1st Black woman to earn a PhD in in the US! She made important research contributions to the biochemisty of the cell nucleus & cardiovascular issues & our knowledge of the chemistry of histones & protein synthesis. She published original research establishing that….

Dr Dorothy Stopford Price, born in Dublin in 1890, introduced the BCG vaccine to Ireland. She wrote the textbook on childhood TB and chaired Irish National BCG Committee. So you have her to thank for your great granny not succumbing to TB!

She began her research in St Ultan's Hospital, founded by fellow Cumann na mBan member Kathleen Lynn. Her aunt was senator Alice Stopford Green.

Una de les causes que hi haja menys dones en carreres STEM (Ciències, Tecnologia, Enginyeries i Matemàtiques) és l'existència d'estereotips en la societat.

It's great to see menstruation and women's specific hygiene in field science get so much airtime right now! It's such a big, potentially embarrassing thing, especially for young women, and normalising talk about menstruation is one way to make fieldwork more accessible.

Know her name: Caroline Herschel (1750-1848) made contributions to that are still important to the field today.

And she’s just one in a long line of female astronomers who did not receive the credit they were due and whose work was used to justify prizes for male scientists instead.

Welcome to ! For day 1: starry, it’s Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (1900-1979), who discovered what stars are made of & that hydrogen & helium are the most common elements in the universe.

Born England, she won a scholarship to Newnham College Cambridge in 1919 where she heard a lecture which changed her life. 🧵1/n

Part 5/5 of a 🧵about .

I’ve been told the and anti-mask attacks are my own fault, for speaking.

I’ve also been explicitly told that I don’t understand racism/equity.

In my opinion, advocacy as an MD and @OCDSB trustee should never lead to people saying they want to gas your family. But what do I know?

And despite it all - and sadly there is more, but I can’t talk about yet - here I am, still speaking.

Went to a “Women Technical Principals Night” last evening. Brought a Senior Principal dude with me by claiming he was my platonic lesbian work life-partner.

I usually don’t go to these things because woman-only spaces turn into ineffective bitch sessions. You can’t break the system by changing yourself.

You need to subvert and suborn the voices with power.

While employed at a as a Lecturer, I frequently requested (in writing) mentorship on how to apply for large-scale schemes like NESP. It never happened. In the 9 months since , I’ve been included on 2 NESP bids and an application for ship-time (very nearly submitted an ARC grant too). We can do better, is choosing not to

If you're around Paris at the time, save the evening of September 27th for the 44th meetup that will take place at ENS rue d'Ulm!

The team is still ironing out the details, so I can't tell you more, but as usual there will be 3 women giving talks, followed by some time for discussion and networking. All are welcome to attend.

Watch meetup.com/Paris-Women-in-Mach for details.
