One cannot be a feminist and NOT an anti-imperialist. You cannot advocate for women's liberation without decrying the root of where women's oppression comes from and what continues to terrorize women and their children and families internationally.

One of my favorite images from the fight for national suffrage for women in the US, taken in 1917, outside the White House. Lucy Burns, co-founder of the National Woman’s Party, and Dora Lewis, hold a banner claiming Woodrow Wilson is lying to Russia’s envoys by claiming the US is a democracy when it denies suffrage to millions — all women. Burns died in 1966, which I mention to highlight how recently women gained any political rights in the U.S. at all.

If you take the time to read this chronology of the National Woman’s Party carefully, I think you will be struck by how often Congressional committees tabled and rejected women’s suffrage bills. Frustratingly akin to efforts in our own time to guarantee women’s right. loc.gov/static/collections/wom

In addition to teaching the horrible Minor v. Happersett opinion I noted earlier today, tomorrow I will also be teaching about how the National Women’s Party and some of its predecessor organizations used the legislative process to advance the cause of women’s suffrage at the federal level. If U.S. law schools more fully taught legislative process, it would not be so exceptional to teach law students historical instances of the use of that process.

Tomorrow, I teach Minor v. Happersett, the 1874 U.S. Supreme Court case that decided the 14th Amendment did not extend suffrage to women. It is one of the most despicable judicial opinions I know of, yet rarely is it highlighted as such in U.S. legal education. What makes it so despicable is that the Court traps women in an egregious catch-22. 1/ [short thread]

African Women in Revolution by Wunyabari O. Maloba

"This book is an ambitious, extensive and detailed analysis of the roles played by African women in seven revolutionary movements in post World War II Africa. The revolutionary movements covered in this book occurred in: Algeria, Kenya, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Angola, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. The book describes and analyzes the nature and impact of women's participation in these revolutionary movements. How did these revolutionary movements define women's liberation? What is the linkage between feminist theories of liberation and national liberation? Did the national liberation movements betray women? And what has been the fate of the original commitments (and impulses) toward women's liberation and gender equality?"

Just sent in the next chapter of -- Chapter 9, the Road of Women and the Family. Hoping it sparks discussion.

"the possibility of a simultaneous process of recuperation of personality and community arises from the reality of the family in crisis and the position of women; a process that in various ways leads to the perspective of solidarity economy"

Love this picture of my friend Yunoki san, who we all refer to as "legend" because of her decades of struggle for democratic unionism and women's liberation. In the first photo she's on strike against the merger of Showa Oil and Shell Oil, in 1984. The men are managers, monitoring and mocking her. In the second one she is at a May Day demo calling for parental leave for men and women and protesting firings.
