The sun has been out at last and is now going down over the fen. The old man's beard catches the light nicely. The breeze picks off the occasional seed and carries it away to a new life. The seeds are so delicate they look as if the sunlight could dislodge them just by shining a little harder.

This small plant growing on the fringe of an exposed and windy beach ought to make a fairly inhospitable abode. Tell that to the 30+ snails that were living in it.

Carbis Bay, on the northern coast of Cornwall. Very different in character from the rockier southern shores, especially on the Lizard peninsula.

Only a few miles from the most southerly point of the UK, this beach looks into the widest part of the English Channel (La Manche to out neighbours), right at the point where it becomes the Atlantic. The horizon at sea is only a little over three miles away, but I enjoy knowing that, beyond these rocks, there is nothing out there for hundreds of miles.

#onthisday in 1971, #jazz great #louisarmstrong passed away. Born in #neworleans in 1901, he later became a fixture in the #nyc #music scene, being a major figure in the #Harlem #Renaissance. The only home he ever owned was in #corona #queens, where he lived with his wife from 1943 until his death.
