I just wheelbarrowed the first load of firewood down from the big stack beside the greenhouse. (You can just see the dark tarpaulin cover.)
So I went through all the wood stacked against the longest wall of the house. It's been that kind of winter.
The rest of the wood will probably last me till the end of the winter, unless we have yet another way too cold May month.
June, July & August are now the only months in which I've never needed to use my wood burner.

Bad news for wood burners I'm afraid. Yes, even the "eco-friendly" ones. Monbiot writes honestly about it.

"Though only 8% of households in UK (mostly wealthy ones) have a wood-burning stove, they release more small particulates (the most dangerous pollutants) than all vehicles on the road. Even modern, approved, “eco-friendly” woodburners produces 750 times as many fine particulates as a heavy goods vehicle."

The first thing we did when we moved into our house 11 years ago was fit a #woodburner . This is a conversation long overdue, but completely agree that this being in large part a middle class technology will make that challenge.

Getting cold here. Switching to more oak and less birch in the #WoodBurner.

Oak gives out more heat and burns slower than birch but is tricky to keep going. If fire goes below a certain threshold intensity it can be hard to recover. Keep a few birch splits handy to get it back going.
