I've never had any problems using fresh arborist's #woodchips as mulch ON TOP of the soil. I was once lectured by a FB group gardening "expert" that #mulching my newly planted strawberries with fresh woodchips would kill them. Instead, the plants thrived and put out well over 100 runners INTO THE #MULCH, the paths, everywhere. Which is not even the worst as municipality trees are (also for this reason) pruned way to heavily in order to get more #woodchips to sell as biofuel... A bit of a #policy gone wrong in my opinion... #politics

Make sure that the pile will have fresh #woodchips and dried leaves as a brown material.
The pile must be as close as it can be to a #woods environment. Make sure when you are done to give some of the compost back to the woods.

In the last light of the day, I finished the distribution of woodchips between the new veg beds.
The idea behind the #woodchips is to encourage fungal activity. The #fungi provide (most) veggies with water and nutrients and get sugar in return.
To protect this fungal web is one reason for #nodig gardening.
Decaying woodchips compete with plants for nitrogen. So mostly it is not so good to incorporate them in the soil.

#worm casting 1 volume
#compost 1 volume
#garden soil 1 volume
The #vermicast keeps the mixture moist and helps the #seed germinate faster.
The compost is made with more #carbon and #WoodChips to give a good texture
The garden #soil helps the #seedling not have a #transplant issues.

The fill for my new beds is 2-1/2 yr old partially composted elm #woodchips. Using it because I have it - plus, buying in yards of topsoil would risk contamination (chemicals, Asian jumping worms). Still, it's pretty coarse #compost w/ lots of wood still identifiable. (LOTS of night-crawlers in it, however.) A bit worried about N2-"robbing" in the next season or 2. Might add some blood meal along w/ rock dust next spring.🤔 #permaculture #gardening
