"Winter Moon Night," Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, 1919.

Wow, those colors! This was a view from Kirchner's window, and done with several successive woodblocks, each carefully done to overlap perfectly. Kirchner, a German, was living in Switzerland and loving the scenery there.

"Snow Pines," Helen Frankenthaler, 2004.

Believe it or not, this Abstract Expressionist work is a woodcut, although very much touched up with highlights and layering. A nice demonstration of what you can do with traditional techniques.

Mixed my up with my cards today. Making some card holders covered in this freehand, intricate pattern work I enjoy doing so much. They take around 4 hours to make. I’ll put them in my shop once I finish a few more & rest my thumb a bit.

After some linocutting I decided in May of this year to set up five , to see if I would have a feel for it. I now have the results, and I am happy with them. I want to continue it, with better woodblocks, better paper… i will pursue it! Will start the new year with setting up a webshop for the prints 🙂

Lynd Ward was a bookmaker and printer but wasn't really interested in the written word - his woodcuts and illustrations show he was a master of storytelling, along with Rockwell Kent. Ward released the first wordless novel, Gods' Man in 1929

"Laziness (La paresse)," Félix Vallotton, 1896.

A nude woman relaxes on a bed, reaching out to a playful cat. Vallotton was one of the Nabis, a school of art I love. This woodcut is a great example of the Nabi love of pattern and intimate scenes. This is the sort of lazing we all love to do.
