After a Patrick O'Brian binge it seems a good time to find out why htere is such a fuss around The Wager. Expecting all that specialist vocabulary (orlops and waisters) I have built up might come in handy.

Rereading the naval novels of Patrick O'Brian, something I like to do every few years. Currently started in the middle of the sequence with The Nutmeg of Consolation and now halfway through Clarissa Oakes. Can think of few writers who create such a totally convincing world. What did O'Brian not know about naval life and society in the age of Napoleon?
