It may sound kind of weird but I read that bees as well as other bugs can be attracted to certain types of clothing and even the colors of clothing.

One of my hidden gem places is the wetland area on the White Oak Greenway in Cary, North Carolina.
That is where I photographed the green anole I shared recently and is also the home of a few red headed woodpeckers.

At the studio I go to we are having a raffle for mugs. This is my entry. Funds go toward the program that got me into pottery, called Re-Fire. The programme is for people who suffer with mental health problems, to be introduced to the joy of clay. It has helped me a lot. I'm glad to be able to repay a little of that.

I've only ever seen male woodpeckers banging their heads against bird feeders and telephone poles; I assumed that was more about marking territory than eating. So I was surprised to see this female banging away. But, looking close up, maybe she found something good?

Acorn Woodpeckers
I came home to a crew of 4 or 5 Acorn Woodpeckers at the top of my palm tree. They were a pretty raucous group, alternately pecking for bugs in the cracks of the tree trunk and jousting with each other.
They let me take a few photos and then they flew off.

In the past, the adult pileated woodpeckers brought their young to the feeder to teach them how use it. This year, I didn't see them do it. But here is a young female pileated on the feeder. And there have been 2 hummingbirds in the yard all summer (a male and a female) and suddenly, I see 3 of them at once. A Pileated Woodpecker is a very large, striking, forest bird with red crest and white and black plumage. This juvenile Pileated Woodpecker could hear me, and then saw me, but was more interested in the foraging for food in the cracks of the bark on the trees.
