Juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker, though not the best view. It appears very lacking in red, only v small patch on underbelly, so may be a juvenile female. Heard it calling before seeing it in the air. It then sat above us untroubled for a few minutes before flying off at speed. So few birds about by woodland around Cocksburn Reservoir. Really scary for the future! Relieved to see this one at least. #ScottishWildlife #ScottishBirds #woodpeckers

The terms are: (a) I acknowledge that I harmed the #woodpeckers by cutting down a very large, old oak tree; (b) as recompense, I provide #suet feeders year-round, and (c) the woodpeckers agree to stop banging on my house.
It took 4 months to negotiate this treaty, and it is in constant jeopardy because other #birds are harassing the woodpeckers and eating all the suet.
#BlueJays are the worst, but even other woodpeckers are doing it.

A Pileated Woodpecker is a very large, striking, forest bird with red crest, white and black plumage that sounds really loud when hammering on a tree in the forest These two juvenile Pileated Woodpeckers could see and hear me, but were more interested in the foraging for food in the cracks of the bark on the trees.

It's mulberry time!
Most Mulberry trees here are White Mulberries, introduced to North America in a failed attempt to farm silkworms. They provide an attractive buffet for a host of critters. I encountered a Pileated Woodpecker snacking them straight from the tree. Snapping turtles like them, too.

Northern Flicker - very unusual among #woodpeckers in that they spend a lot of time foraging on the ground. Often seen thrashing around in the leaf litter like this guy I saw today. His little black mustache (or malar stripe) is how you know he's a male.
