Rhododendron comes from the ancient Greek ῥόδον rhódon "rose" and δένδρον déndron "tree". Larger rhododendrons like these are pruned to encourage a tree-like form. I find rhododendron trees with wavy trunks like these aesthetically pleasing. The small copse of straight bamboo on the left lends contrast.

Meet the mighty Elwah River out on the Olympic Peninsula. It’s not just another pretty place but also the sight of the world’s largest dam removal project.

Meet the “water lily camellia,” Camellia x williamsii, a hybrid. The large evergreen shrub has these lovely formal double camellia inflorescences and they sometimes bloom here in the PNW as early as January. Don’t we love a precocious bloomer! This particularly delicious blossom is from 2022, bottom left is the original shade; ring is a symbol for protection.

Sometime the mossy dreams of we bryophiliacs surprise us when they rewild our waking landscapes. This mossy haunt hides in Seattle.
