#WordPerfect 5.1 for #DOS in an #ArchLinux #i3 VM? Yes, and it even prints! I could’ve gone one step further and printed the document to an actual printer, but I already have a printed copy, and I didn’t want to waste paper.

I already got this working with a #Windows host. Next stop: the #Mac, because why not?

Some of you really, really wanted me to try #WordStar… so I did. I even set up an emulated IBM PC/AT 5170 in 86Box to make it as period-accurate as possible.

This is my first time using it, so I won’t even try to compare it with #WordPerfect, which is what I grew up with. I’ll see how I feel about it after I’ve had a chance to learn it properly.

I never tried Corel #Linux, but they had #WordPerfect for Linux, right? Used that off and on for a few years.

12/ When I discovered #FreeBSD and #Linux in about 1995, I was hooked. Hooked by several things: the concept of #FreeSoftware, the entire system being no cost, and being able to run servers.

Back in the day, #WordPerfect or #Word, or a spreadsheet, often cost $400-$500. Server software and hardware, such as Netware, would have been thousands. It was utterly unavhievable for the individual. Not everything was glorious in those days.

#Wordperfect was a gateway drug for #Emacs.

The oldest I used was WordPerfect on MS-DOS. It was 2000, already an old computer then, one room at school still had a few. We could play if we had time left in class. It had games too, but I wasn't interested in those.

Its monochrome display beamed bright orange/amber! (not grey/green.) I never saw that before...

I own seven laptops (nine if you count the broken ones) but I'd gladly trade all but one of them for a #tandy1000 or a decently spec'ed #486 portable with integrated sound card. and yes, I know, I can emulate every #ms-dos game and even my beloved #wordperfect 5.1 on any modern PC; I'm just blinded by the warm fuzzy mists of nostalgia.

At least on my #firefox browser, #mastodon software is so superior to #twitter software; easier to use, more features, better organization

and yet, as I understand #software and #tech better Q doesn't count for poop

#Emacs is trending on #mastodon right now. Such memories... #Emacs was the first "real" programmer's text editor I encountered in college CS classes after spending my youth programming in #BASIC on a TI-99/4A and using #Wordperfect to edit text with. I think it may have contributed to my quick realization that I would never make it as a #programmer .

@hotkey #WordPerfect’s “Reveal Codes” was the “View #HTML Source” of its day. Familiarity with it helped prepare me for that and other markup languages.

@jsherkow I started using #MicrosoftWord back in the 80s while still predominantly using #WordPerfect. I made money typing papers for other college students, in the beginning on a typewriter. (I charged a high per-page rate but corrected grammar and citation errors.) I preferred Word then. Now, I much prefer #LaTeX but that makes it impossible to collaborate with legal colleagues. Oh well…
