Hi, all ! I was wondering if anyone could help me with a link (or textpost/reply) on how I can get started with emacs.

I'd like to use it as a replacement for the largest proprietary word processor (er-hem, MS 🪟).

ik i can simply search the web & also read emacs' documentation, which I will, but i'm soliciting recommendations of what guides you personally like!

Thank u !! 🫶

Also, have a superb week ‼️🐝

My personal experience is just the opposite. Admittedly I rarely use Word, but when I do I have terrible problems with the way it changes formats for no obvious reason. At least LaTeX allows transparent and precise control of layout. For complicated text with a lot of mathematical formulae LaTeX (or one of the other TeX packages) wins hands down for me. What do others think?

@blakespot Early on,
Scripsit: archive.org/details/scripsit-w

Then AtariWriter: archive.org/details/AtariWrite

Paperclip was the best word processor of all time: atarimagazines.com/v4n1/paperc

AppleWorks at school, and some 1st Word ST, but not heavily.

By late '80s/early '90s I mostly used vi and troff for my "word processing", but had WordPerfect on the ST; IIRC I got a student discount and the shitty thin version of the manual, not the full thing.

Now BBEdit & multimarkdown.

More tidying up my study desk, prior to setting up my new desktop computer (hopefully tomorrow). Rediscovering a whole bunch of interesting books.

The following are two FLOSS word processors I've used and liked:

1) FocusWriter
a) Arch Linux official repository package:
archlinux.org/packages/communi
b) Developer's website: gottcode.org/focuswriter

2) WordGrinder (console-based)
a) AUR package: aur.archlinux.org/packages/wor
b) Developer's website: cowlark.com/wordgrinder

Interesting bit of trivia. Author Len Deighton was the first person to write a book with a word processor, an IBM MTST (Magnetic Tape Selectric Typewriter) in 1970.

Article from 2013.

Interesting. A review of the book, "Track Changes: A Literary History of Word Processing" on the history of word processing and the people who used it. Includes an interesting anecdote on Neal Stephenson.

From the New York Times, an obituary of an unsung inventor: Evelyn Berezin, who build the first true word processor.
