Some of you really, really wanted me to try #WordStar… so I did. I even set up an emulated IBM PC/AT 5170 in 86Box to make it as period-accurate as possible.
This is my first time using it, so I won’t even try to compare it with #WordPerfect, which is what I grew up with. I’ll see how I feel about it after I’ve had a chance to learn it properly.

My goodness!
There's an open source (AGPL) #WordStar clone named "WordTsar".
And it replicates the original TUI menus with a GUI.
It's not in the #FreeBSD ports tree, or packaged for #Debian, but the AUR has had it since 2021.

(I remember when people nicknamed Word Perfect after a #HHGTTG character.)

@Silversnapples , I posted a poll, coincidentally, at https://mastodonapp.uk/@JdeBP/110083455751871082 .
It has several days still to run, and has only reached very few people, but preliminary results indicate that _zero_ people here know #WordStar keystrokes by heart. And only one person even knows #vi.
So you can relax happily in the knowledge that anyone here _claiming_ to be technical isn't _that_ technical really. (-:
@Uilebheist never thought of #nano as a tribute to #wordstar. If that was the real intent, which it kind of makes sense now, then you just made me feel less disgusted with nano. I do miss WordStar and its landing page
I've also been a professional soap bubble entertainer, a goat milker and herd caretaker, an #editor and product manager at #Coach.me, a project manager and builder of websites for companies like CrowdVine, #MAKE Magazine, #MakerFaire, and O'Reilly. Not to mention an old life of #bartending and very early tech support (#WordStar, anyone?) I have had some good escapades in a very strange career path.

Before #DOS, there was CP/M, written for the #Z80 processor. After owning a Sharp MZ-80K, I bought a Bondwell 12. A real 'portable' computer, running CP/M. It came with programs like #WordStar and #CalcStar.
I still remember most of the WordStar keystroke combinations as well as many CP/M commands, but it's all slowly fading away. Maybe a good thing, it's now a waste of memory.
pip a:=b:*.* anyone?
Found myself on a website able to tell me about all the #software I used to use in the 80s and 90s.
#WordStar anyone? This splash screen takes me back. How about Framework? Multimate? Word Perfect? I loved #LotusSmartsuite in particular as it was packaged free with new PCs and it become my main home workhorse. I even developed Approach databases.
I see this evidence that we will have to be continuous learners, as software will not stand still despite our lament of “Oh no! They’ve changed the interface again.”

Hello, I'm Sean and I realized I've never posted an #introduction (better late than never). I'm a long time technology lurker but have decided to come out of the woodwork and actually interact with interesting people.
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and work in the network services team at UC Berkeley. I have a background in #systems, #networking, and #security. I also have a long history of choosing operating systems that fade away after I've made them part of my day to day world. #CPM, #OS/2, #FreeBSD, and #NetBSD were my platforms of choice over the years. Granted the BSD's are still alive and strong, but just not as high profile as it was many years ago. BTW, I am team #WordStar :)
My father builds and fixes things. He's kept cars, tools, and electronics working years after others would have tossed them aside. I learned to solder from an early age watching him work and helping out with small things. I learned my love of creating and fixing things from him.
Oh, and if you haven't noticed I'm wordy.

...not really my #introduction but it (currently my profile pic) may give some hints about topics besides #emacs that can make me smile.

J'apprends que George Martin a écrit Game of Thrones sur #Wordstar (car il n'aime pas le WYSIWYG) et qu'il a fallu un émulateur pour faire tourner ce vieux truc.
