as @RichardJMurphy points out this morning, the #Tories wrecking campaign against the public sector, by making working conditions so unwelcoming & badly paid is having a continuing effect, with shortage of #teachers, #nurses and other key public #workers.

The game plan is clear:
attack the public services via defunding & stressing the workforce;

use #austerity to claim money is tight, to reduce real wages;

claim: 'we'd like to run better public services, but we just can't get the staff'!

Here's an interesting take on #unnions from Mattias Dahl (Confederation of Swedish Enterprise):

'The worst thing from an employer’s point of view is small & weak unions... This puts stress on a union. That’s when they might try to attract members by burning tires & screaming'.

Sweden has strong sector-wide unions which allow the state, employers & #workers to negotiate on pay, regulations & working conditions with less strife.

Good: optimism about the future of #Barrow is in full effect, with #BAE's full order book offering the town 30yrs of work building submarines.... and as you can see their #productivity is on the way up (while they still hope to attract more #workers to the 'longest cul-de-sac in the country).

Unsurprisingly, as #JeremyHunt thinks absence from the labour market due to #longtermsickness is the major underlying cause of shortages of #workers, the #Tories are looking to reform work capability assessments so as to 'encourage' more of the long term sick back into work;

they think this is helping people who aspire to get back to work to find appropriate work, critics see this as a vindictive targeting of the vulnerable.
