Today in Labor History September 6, 1869: The Avondale fire killed 110 miners, including several juveniles under the age of 10. It led to the first mine safety law in Pennsylvania. Avondale is near Plymouth, Pennsylvania. The Susquehanna River flows nearby. The mine had only one entrance, in violation of safety recommendations at the time. In the wake of the fire, thousands of miners joined the new Workingmen’s Benevolent Association, one of the nation’s first large industrial unions (and precursor to the United Mineworkers). My book, “Anywhere But Schuylkill,” opens with this fire. My main character, Mike Doyle, joins the bucket brigade trying to put out the flames shooting out of the mineshaft.

As someone that works outside in high heat, I'm very aware of the dangers of heat stroke. Fortunately, I determine my own safety and preparedness when it comes to protecting myself, but what about businesses that only respond to legislation and threats of fines?

I'm sure it's not only the US that is struggling with this question...

Regulators with the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries have fined four times since 2021, alleging that inspections of three of its warehouses showed workers were at a high risk of injury due to repetitive motions and, in some cases, a fast pace of work” seattletimes.com/business/amaz

New study links Canadian farms to 64 COVID-19 outbreaks in 2020, most tied to greenhouses due to high humidity and indoor crowding at a time when masks were not routinely being used.

Canadian farm workers were classified as Essential Workers. 32% of Ontario farm workers worked in greenhouses.

When my current phone dies, my next phone will be a !

I'm no saint, but after reading and watching some videos on the topic, I cannot buy another phone from the big companies and feel OK. We need companies and products like Fairphone, with not only a focus on sustainability and envirment, but also on the supply chain and social impact! Vote with your wallets for the future you want to see 👍

Federal agencies encouraged BP to take urine, blood or skin swab samples of cleanup workers to detect whether toxins had entered their bloodstream. Instead, the fossil fuel firm depended on air monitoring to determine if workers were safe. Internal emails, gleaned from discovery in the lawsuits and reported on for the first time by the Guardian, show that was not BP’s only goal.

In a chain of emails among BP’s occupational hygiene team from 31 July 2010, the company discussed why it was continuing its air monitoring efforts. “Although we are documenting zero exposures in most monitoring efforts, the monitoring itself adds value in the eyes of public perception, and zeros add value in defending potential litigation,” wrote John Fink, a BP industrial hygienist.
“Key findings from our investigation into the people who got sick after cleaning up BP’s oil spill” theguardian.com/business/2023/

Did you know that makes up about 25% of work-related deaths worldwide? 👀
