Making people work for food and other #benefits goes back to the idea of the #workhouse.
This evening, to attempt to keep up momentum of working on the dissertion over the holidays I'm back to trying to locate baptism, marriage and burial information for my pack of Irish paupers.
If you hear screaming it's just me getting frustrated with negative searches

After a less than successful run earlier I've decided I'm still not well enough to do 5k, have put Spooks on (had completely forgotten about the fryer scene) and am back in the Irish records, looking at workhouse inhabitants

Interesting story - the Enniskillen Workhouse in Ireland, which opened in 1845, has been transformed into a business enterprise hub and heritage centre. Their collection includes transcribed admission records. During the Great Famine about 10,000 people passed through its doors in a 4-year period. Of those about one in five died and was buried in a paupers' graveyard or other graveyards in the town.

@MishJHolman that's why I switched the case studies, rather than trying to work out who in Brownlow Hill #Workhouse were #Irish in 1841!

Does anybody else see a return of the #Workhouse coming if the #Tories get in next time?
It was not always this way, of course. The article outlines a long history into the 1600s.
> According to "[t]he Criminal Code of 1903 (β¦) [w]omen who performed self-abortions were subject to detention in a #workhouse for up to three years; the same for anybody who assisted the abortion."
From 1936-1955 "abortions were banned β except for those necessary for medical reasons. Why? [O]ne of the 'old #Bolsheviks,' expressed the official position in an article in #Trud (Labor) newspaper: " (cont)
βIn harder economic times, it's possible some of your #British and #Irish #ancestors spent time in the #workhouse.β https://youtu.be/7SeiyN_TEE0 #genealogy
