Machine Learning and WorldCat: improving records for cataloging and discovery
"This will result in 500,000 duplicate records being merged in WorldCat, which will improve and streamline cataloging, discovery, and interlibrary loan experiences..."
@PLOS
Update. #WorldCat (#OCLC) has removed the #trademark symbol from its image of the #OpenAccess icon.
See the same set of WorldCat records to which I linked in my toot last month:
https://www.worldcat.org/search?oclcNum=1391215977&slug=1391215977&q=kw%3A%22open+access%22&datePublished=2022-2023&openAccess=true

Another hard part of a Goodreads clone in the Fediverse would be search, which seems to be intentionally weak in the Fediverse but is sort of the point in Goodreads.
And finally there's data persistence. I want a lifetime record of my personal book database but unless you run your own instance, the Fediverse is all about relying on the ephemeral kindness of strangers.
Any way around these limitations?

As long as we're applying the everything-looks-like-a-nail principle with the Fediverse as a hammer:
How feasible would it be to make a Fediverse replacement for Goodreads?
One hard part would be the book database. Possibly one could leverage WorldCat. (But who owns Worldcat?)

What's up, #WorldCat?
Are you seriously claiming a #trademark on the orange "OA" / "open padlock" symbol for #OpenAccess?
Many examples in the wild:

History lesson: @PLOS created the symbol and put it in the #PublicDomain with #CC0.

Forever I will not understand why #WorldCat doesn't have a logo of a cat on top of the world. The logo would be static but the loading image would be the cat spinning the globe, browsing for resources and being a menace per nature.
I'm fully allowing them to use my idea, shedding off any copyright or trademark. Other big brands can also contact me for genius #GraphicDesign suggestions but know it may take a minute, as I generated the cat vision more than five years ago and am still recovering from this creative explosion.

I'm sure this is a naive question, but why does #WorldCat include Alibris in the list of #libraries under bibliographic records? Why is it not in the sidebar with Amazon, Abebooks, etc.? WorldCat has been racing itself to the bottom for years, but letting users click the "borrow" button only to be directed to commercial listings is such an insulting low.
There is an API, but it seems only available to libraries that subscribe to their cataloging service they provide. #worldcat #oclc https://www.oclc.org/developer/api/oclc-apis/worldcat-search-api.en.html

#Metadatastodon: have you found a way to pry RIS files from the greedy hands of current #worldcat search? I am not smiling like the folks on their landing page:
Idly searching on WorldCat, saw a result with an "Open Access/Access free" button, thought, Sweet!
...It downloaded a 4-page scan of the table of contents from LoC's catalog. I'm not a digital specialist, but I don't see that as remotely the same level as a full resource available #OA. Surely they can find a better way to denote that there is a sample portion of a resource available.
*adds to my grumpy list of why the new #WorldCat really peeves me*
There are a lot of things that I'm proud of, but seeing my name and book appear in the WorldCat catalog is definitely one of my proudest moments. 🤓 #RunningStart #Library #WorldCat #Book

12 years ago, #OCLC Research conducted a study on the most common fields in #WorldCat. Everything has a title, of course, but then the number of fields that library records have in common drops off quickly. https://dltj.org/article/issue-96-metadata#most-important 2/4
