February 1st is #WorldGalgoDay.
It's the end of the hunting season.
It's estimated that 50 000 to 100 000 dogs are killed each year when they are no longer useful to hunters. The 'lucky ones' are dropped at pounds - overrun places where large numbers are euthanized to make room for more. Read more about galgos and podencos:

Tonight, my humans are lighting a candle for my extended family for #WorldGalgoDay. Tens of thousands of Galgos (Spanish greyhounds) are bred each year to be used & abused for hunting in Spain. Feb 1st marks the end of hunting season, and the beginning of the torture and slaughter of thousands of these beautiful dogs. Hunters 'dispose' of Galgos in the most horrific ways ... hung from trees, thrown into wells, starved, beaten to death or abandoned. 🕯💙 #freethegalgo #animalrights
