Today, the 21st of November, is World Philosophy Day. I am going to treat it with the reverence that Diogenes would have wanted.

“ He who desires but acts not, breeds pestilence.”
William Blake
For #WorldPhilosophyDay I'm posting about Byung-Chul Hahn, and his "Burnout Society":
"Byung-Chul Hahn argues that Foucault’s punishment and criminalization society doesn’t work nowadays. We’re living in an open, interconnected society where freedom is paramount".

Trying to make use of, and get familiar with, peertube so did a mashup of some of my favourite things... M.C. Escher, Alan Watts and Royalty Free Music. Have a happy non-euclidean Friday ;-)
#AlanWatts: "You are an aperture through which the universe is looking at and exploring itself."

"The people recognize themselves in their commodities; they find their soul in their automobile, hi-fi set, split-level home, kitchen equipment,"
This is deep. What Marcuse was voicing was his belief that in advanced societies, built on mass production and mass distribution, the individual worker becomes merely a consumer of its commodities and entire commodified way of life....a society where people have a need to recognise themselves in their possessions...
Thoughts?
But late, but hard to go past #Epictetus on #WorldPhilosophyDay
"Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants."
"There is only one way to happiness and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power or our will."
"It's not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters."

Given that it's #worldphilosophyday Nietzsche would appreciate my current follower count (0)
This #worldphilosophyday, reading a fascinating article by Kevin D. Hoover on causality in economics and econometrics. Some interesting potential links to ideas about empirical economics/ what empirical approaches to economics should entail.
@SpaceFairy Ah! #StarWars quote for #WorldPhilosophyDay
There's another one I like:

Such a fun audience! And look at the cool poster they made for me:

It was fun spending #WorldPhilosophyDay listening to and learning from @AgnesCallard@twitter.com 😊 (oh and btw, Agnes, upstate NY isn’t all that far from here, it’s just across Lake Ontario😉)

“Life creates itself in delirium and is undone in ennui.”
Emil Cioran
Celebrating #WorldPhilosophyDay by being absolutely broke while being owed money by at least three different academic institutions. You have to be Chilean to understand… (?)
“A revolution is not a dinner party, or writing an essay, or painting a picture, or doing embroidery; it cannot be so refined, so leisurely and gentle, so temperate, kind, courteous, restrained and magnanimous. A revolution is an insurrection, an act of violence by which one class overthrows another.”
-Mao Tse-tung
Today is #WorldPhilosophyDay and while it’s not a full time gig for me, I still want to celebrate.
Lately I’ve been thinking about linguistics oppression in relation to large language models. To wit, LLM’s boost and reinforce the dominant dialect they’re trained on. Worse, one of the common uses for LLM is enforcing privileged grammar.

Revisiting old Augustine of Hippo on this #WorldPhilosophyDay. Before going out to get drunk, of course.
