White Throated Sparrow

I heard today is #WorldSparrowDay! In the US the house sparrow is an invasive species, but white throated sparrows are native and common in and around urban environments.

I've collected hundreds of dead and injured from window strikes and cats.

You can help sparrows and other wildlife by turning off indoor lights at night in spring and fall, keeping cats inside, planting native plants and avoiding pesticides.

Another for #WorldSparrowDay : a White-throated Sparrow. Another common ground-foraging sparrow in my area that scratches among leaf-litter looking for seeds or insects like a mini-chicken. These are found throughout much of North America, although they nest toward the Canadian border and north. Their colors can be subtle shades of warm brown with white or yellow stripes and throat and a contrasting grey face. The Dark-eyed Junco is a North American sparrow that favors open woodlands, but can be found in various edge habitats including suburban yards, where it forages on the ground for insects and seeds. The eastern morph is dark grey above and white below, while the western form has a more varied color scheme.
