@RMiddleton Hey, congrats on making the foray into the fiction. I imagine the menu at the hospital is quite limiting - do you want the red tube or the green tube. ^.^ #Writephant
That's a wrap. Thanks for chatting with me today!
Self-promotion time! What links, pieces of writing, art, and so forth would you
like people to see in this chat? Post as many as you like within the character
limit! #Writephant
@adriabailton That's so weird, I'd have thought Hot Cross Bun day would be closer to Easter. Kudos for noticing, I wonder who decided that. #Writephant
Q4: Favourite fictional meal?
I’m sure I have one or two, but the meal that has jumped straight into my mind with this question is from reading Enid Blyton with my son and the straight-up awesome picnic food the Secret Seven and Famous Five get. In fact, all the food in her books!

@AvrilMAalund Sorry to hear that the taste issue is such a long term thing. I suppose texture replaces it? Have to admit, I've never considered a mini-pizza on crackers. #Writephant

Q3: I suppose characters drink more than eat, now that I think about it. Food's varied from a granola bar to poutine. (Hi, I'm Canadian.) Fave food has come up before, still no real answer, other than pizza.
Q4: I don't think I've ever read about a fave meal either. I'm one of those eat for necessity types (other than the chips, eh heh). And I probably shouldn't bring up the Peaches with Chartreuse jelly again, it's just stuck in my head.
My book is a romance, so two MC vampires.
The last thing MC 1 ate before becoming a vampire was some Turkish bar snacks and beer before being invited to the home of a vampire in Constantinople to drink whisky.
For the other MC, his last meal was Japanese food when he was turned vampire in Kyoto a couple of hundred years earlier.

@mathtans Welcome!
It's always good to have you join in.
Breaking up dialogue is a great item for food on page.
Q3: On- page food? MC’s favourite food?
One of the earliest scenes is the team, a group of specialist guards, eating the pie my MC has just made while he introduces them to the new arrival, who is setting the plotline into motion. It’s a pear and blueberry pie, much to another character’s disgust, because they only like apple.
Actually that character is the only one whose food preferences come across strongly (likes specific strong tastes, cinnamon and chilli among them), because they’re so fussy otherwise.
The MC and the new arrival share a meal later but this question has made me realise I very much gloss over what they’re eating, I should fix that :)

#Writephant Q4: What is your favorite meal in a piece of fiction? (Feel free to use your own work here, too.)

Q3: What have you had your characters eat on page? What's your WIPs MC's favorite food?
I've had my characters eat Korean, Japanese, Victoria-era food, French, Algerian, Egyptian, Turkish, among other things.
In my current WIP, everyone is now a vampire xD so the food of choice would have to be blood~!

Hellooo all! Thanks for having me on #Writephant.
How am I doing? Good, just writing the ending of a novel :D
Q1 I drink tea, water, coffee, sparkling water, or energy drinks during the day. They keep me focused! At night, I drink non-alco beer, soju, sake, or beer.
Q2 I love having characters eat on page, depending on what country or time period they are in. I find it very interesting, and it is fun to see how the characters react to the food.

#Writephant A3.
What have you had your characters eat on page?
What's your WIPs MC's favorite food?
On the read-through I'm doing, there's been a breakfast with fruit discussed, burritoes for dinner, and a snack of hot chocolate and cookies.
One character always gets a small bag of popcorn at the movies, which is a twist because he also is someone who struggled to eat at mealtimes (not because he snacks but because of other issues.)
#Writephant Q3:
What have you had your characters eat on page?
What's your WIPs MC's favorite food?
There's often mention of White Soup (Regency Era staple) and breads and other baked goods, with beefsteaks, ham, and chicken being common dinners for characters.
Blancmange is a favorite in the dessert department (which I am determined to make someday).
Q2. Do characters eat on page?
Yes. Description is historically my weakest area in fiction writing, and I’ve learned to at least specify what they’re eating, but also these days to use it for character bonding moments, and for worldbuilding.
In my upcoming book, I was deliberately trying to portray a very multicultural place so mention lots of different types of food — it opens with the MC baking a pie, but every other mention of food is non-western-European. In my book due out next year, it’s two very different cultures but I use food to help them find their commonalities amongst the differences.

Today is also National Hot Cross Bun Day in the US, which is what got me on the topic of food in general. It's very possible I had that Writer's Coffee Club question in the back of my mind. 😂
I love having dark chocolate chips as a small snack.

Hi, Rob! Welcome!
Please do join us!
I'm sorry food has become stressful. I hope this chat doesn't make it worse.
@adriabailton Q1 eating or drinking
I recently answered a very similar question on #WritersCoffeeClub :)
I mostly don’t because I’m on a walking treadmill and I don’t like to drop crumbs on it (also envision disaster involving spills and going arse-over). But, especially if stuck on a scene, I like to hop off and grab a handful of almonds, sultanas and choc chips as a distraction break.
Mostly drink water but I don’t complain if my partner pops up with a cup of tea for me

The weather is holding (for now, thankfully), but once it's cool in the evenings, I often have a tea with almond or oat milk. I have to look at the blend I have but since I drink it at night, it's a non-caffeinated one. Tea is so good!
