Sep 11: A piece of advice for an aspiring writer?

Bearing in mind that I'm a hobbyist, my advice is keep your day job. The percentage of writers who hit it big is probably about the same as the percentage of actors who become stars. Make art because it delights you and your loved ones. Fame and fortune aren't the point, as much as they'd be pleasant.

Because she believes entirely in her mission. She believes she's protecting the world from a violent threat, that that protection requires sacrifice and vigilance. It's not even a hard call, for her.

I read that lengths in the industry are minimum 50K words, and the sweet spot is 70K to 100K.

I'm so relieved! I thought it was 120K! My book will probably arrive at 70K, maybe a little less. A short novel, not another unsellable novella.

I mean, she's 12 to start with, but she's also ace and doesn't know it yet. Or maybe she kinda knows it but doesn't *know* it know it. She understands the concept of asexuality, and she understands the concept of dating and stuff, but she hasn't clocked yet that her lack of interest in the former is an indicator of the latter.

- I used to use for everything but found it too be clunky for some stuff. Now I use it mainly for writing and research notes while I use for todos and general ideas and as a diary (I also use for other journaling.) All 3 apps are also on iOS so it makes it easy to write.
- I still carry a paper journal! While the apps are on my iOS devices, sometimes inspiration strikes and I write faster than I can type on a device.

Isn't it great when you solve a problem by solving another problem? I wasn't sure how to get some side characters into the story more, and I wasn't sure how to break out of my central POV character more, and I wanted to feature more nightmares (which are a plot point), so I'm showing the side-characters' nightmares in order to keep them "alive" in the narrative and build intimacy with readers. Huzzah! That's surely a writer hat-trick.

I had such a good writing day last week. I got my plot moving in the right direction towards the ending I’ve already written. And then I haven’t been able to get back to it! Ugh. I see now why some people just stay up and extra four hours. I absolutely cannot physically pull that off, but it feels so much like: hey, quit your job! you’d have so much time! (and ~no~ money).

Sigh.

Sweet baby Superman, I just wrote 1200 words, which isn't lots, but I finally *let* myself get into and "find" a bunch of plot points I'd been trying to connect for months. It all makes sense, now. My A- and B-plots aren't randomly parallel any more. One *causes* the other, which will make it so satisfying when they rejoin in an (I hope!) totally surprising way at the end of a two-chapter arc.

Day 22 Do you prefer writing the first or last chapter?

The last. The first chapter is discovery, and that’s a blast—meeting characters, figuring out how they relate to each other—but the last chapter is bringing it all together, connecting all those threads. That’s deeply satisfying.
