12. If you write novels, would you consider a short story, and vice versa?
I don't really know how to write good short stories, how I could convey a sense of my SF or fantasy world in such few words. Good short stories always leave me wanting to read more and if there isn't anything more I'm disappointed. I could perhaps imagine writing a short about an established world as a teaser or lead-in to the next part of a series etc. I love writing microfiction though.

#WritersCoffeeClub Sept 12. If you write novels, would you consider a short story?
Yes and I have drafted some. I just tend to spend more time with my novels and short stories get pushed lower on the priority list
#WritersCoffeeClub 12: If you write novels, would you consider a short story, and vice versa?
They're all enjoyable. Novels are lush and rich, but short stories are my way of getting ideas out of my head in a reasonable period of time. I especially enjoy story challenges: can I tell an entire story in 100 words? Could I weave a tale using nothing but product reviews? If I reach into a bag filled with random objects and pull one out, could I come up with a plotline around it?
#WritersCoffeeClub 9/12 If you write novels, would you do a short story instead, or vice versa?
I used to write short stories. Sadly, I tend to write long, so finding places to publish them is an issue; also, I hate reading short stories and I'm sure that doesn't help. I do have a good dystopian Sherlockian novella in the drawer that started as a short story...maybe someday...
I did recently find out one of my few published short stories shared a TOC with Aliette de Bodard!
#writerscoffeeclub 12/9 - If you write novels, would you consider a short story, and vice versa? I prefer novels (although 75,000 is my norm) but my first published work was a short story in The Rebel Diaries Anthology.
#WritersCoffeeClub sept 12. The novel vs short story interchange
I’m generally not a big short story writer (though I’ll have short stories at the end of my next two published books as a bonus). I prefer sinking into a world for a time.
That said, my duology grew out of an off-the-cuff short story, in a “I wonder what happened to her next” kind of way, coupled with the image of some arsehole* breaking down the door of a church where terrified people are hiding. I also ended up publishing a collection of short stories from this world. I find they work better for me if I build off known characters and address something I didn’t have time or the right place to in the main book.

#WritersCoffeeClub 12Sep- If you write novels, would you consider a short story, and vice versa?
I'm... way too verbose to write short stories. 😂
Would I consider them? Sure. I like the idea of them. I even have a few ideas for them, but I don't think they'll stay short, because I'll get lost in world building or some such nonsense, and it'll end up a novella, at least.
I admire anyone who can tell a concise story in only a few thousand words. Brevity isn't my strong suit.
#WritersCoffeeClub 12: If you write novels, would you consider a short story, and vice versa?
I write everything. 😅 Some stories are just short when they turn up in my head. Some are mid-sized, and some are novels. I just write what the story says needs to be written.
#WritersCoffeeClub 12.9.: If you write novels, would you consider a short story?
Yep, I haven't done it yet, but pondered it a few times as a measure of world and character building. I think there are a few ideas that won't fit into the novel, but could be reused for short stories. So the short stories would be connected to the novel somehow.
Short stories that have nothing to do with the novel are another matter. At the moment it's a bit difficult for me to leave this world mentally.
#WritersCoffeeClub day 12 - If you write novels, would you consider a short story, and vice versa?
I write both! Short stories come more natural, but am rewriting a novel and that feels just as natural 😀
#WritersCoffeeClub 12: If you write novels, would you consider a short story, and vice versa?
I write both! I'm more comfortable with novel-length and ongoing stuff, but I'm happy with the short stories I've written so far (and, given two of them actually got picked up by magazines over here, at least a couple of other people were as well XD)
Weird thing I'm finding with short stories is that I seem to trend towards first person for them, which isn't my usual POV at all.
#WritersCoffeeClub 12. If you write novels, would you consider a short story? (cont)
My current WIP has given me the taste for writing more short stories.
It opens with characters confessing their personal experiences of a recently ended war as part of a reconciliation process. Each is effectively a standalone short story, naturally revealing a wider problem when pieced together.
Once the novel is done, I feel the need to write more – nothing to do with my novels, for a change.
#WritersCoffeeClub 12. If you write novels, would you consider a short story?
I often write short stories in the world of my novels. Sometimes they explore ideas that didn’t make the book or the consequences of the story. I've written bridging tales between linked novels to help understand SCs better ahead of writing the next book.
I typically make these available free for subscribers of my newsletter.
I’ve a few ideas for standalone short stories – maybe after the current WIP.
#WritersCoffeeClub 9/12. If you write novels, would you consider a short story?
I write both.
I love writing both. Each have unique challenges, and it's fun to switch up between them.
Even better, having short stories to give away to readers of my series is a great marketing idea.
The trick with short stories is to focus on a small story, even if it has a big impact. And for me, that's great fun.

#WritersCoffeeClub If you write novels, would you consider a short story, and vice versa?
I write novels, but I often dabble in short stories. I find short stories are a good way to explore character backstories and cement into my head the world building (I write mostly fantasy).
I should write more shorts, then at least you lovely people would have something to read on my website.
#WritersCoffeeClub 12/9. If you write novels, would you consider a short story?
Most of my work so far were short stories, and when I tried my hand at something more ambitious it ended up being novella length.
So, I think I might write a novel at some point, but I'll always love short stories and keep writing them. I enjoy the challenge of expressing an idea within the confines of a few thousand words.
#WritersCoffeeClub day 12.
If you write novels, would you consider a short story, & vice versa?
I write to whatever length the story needs to be. Often that means I'm working to longer length (though many of them come out in that awkward length between short story & novella) but recently I've been working on a series of short stories to post on my blog, using the #KinkOfTheWeek prompts https://kinkoftheweek.mollysdailykiss.com/

#WritersCoffeeClub 12. If you write novels, would you consider a short story, and vice versa? I mostly have novel-length story ideas… actually, novella-length, which is even worse. I once started writing what I thought would be a short story and it turned into a 100k word book (in a duology probably). Sigh. Not sure what length a story is until I write it.
This short story came out earlier this year, and my WIP now is expanding it into a novel. Or novella, knowing me.

#WritersCoffeeClub Day 12: If you write novels, would you consider writing a short story, and vice versa?
Done both. The first things I ever finished were all short stories. And I still do, in between bigger projects. I prefer to write novels because I like to explore my characters in depth, but some stories are just short.
I have planned short stories turned novel and vice versa 😅
#WritersCoffeeClub Sep 12. If you write novels, would you consider a short story, and vice versa?
A nonfiction equivalent: I write mostly magazine features but I've just written my first book (out now in all good bookshops link in bio) and loved that different rhythm. I can't wait to get into it again. I already miss having that extra breathing space. Although crafting something short and self-contained and polishing it until it shines like a faceted jewel has its own pleasures too.
