My new guest post is published: "Characters in Gothic Fiction"

I'd appreciate it if some of you could leave a comment on the post, perhaps about character roles you recognise from books you've read, or even from books you've written. (Yes, feel free to mention your own book.)

In sections of fast action, keep decriptions sparse and brief. Use verbs rather than adjectives, and focus on sounds rather than sights.

Examples:
'The door splintered with a crash.'
'Tyres screeched on the asphalt.'

I'm encountering the same scary thing in my current total rewrite of my work in progress: characters are being left on the cutting room floor. It's fine, I know it's going to be fine, because I've done this before.

Have you ever cut or been advised to cut characters? Did you do it? Why or why not?

I discovered that when I cut characters, it makes the other relationships so much clearer, but also more precious. I write , so I don't want to have a cast of thousands when my reader could be between 8 and 12 years old.

I did, and it worked out fine. The story got better. I cut the first 2800 words of my manuscript & more or less started at chapter 3. Yeah, it was scary. But my agent told me the beginning was still too slow, and she was right. (I love Arturo, who I hope makes it back into another story of mine one day.)

I'm going to talk about the hardest thing you might be asked to do to your manuscript -- cut characters. (A thread). I swear I never would have tried this with my debut FRIEND ME if I hadn't been about to go on a week-long writing retreat where I had the time to try this crazy thing.

"As soon as I added more backstory and sidestory and aroundstory for all the places and things, January started to feel more like a living place." I enjoyed this from @charliejane via @stephanieburgis

Baptised by fire: today I tried to create a character illustration using
An hour later - I’m going up the wall looking at four-eyed pups or oddly twisted dog-like-mutants. This AI thing makes me doubt my ability to describe shit.

Sorting out threads. My system isn’t very neat or systematic for that matter, but I love that I keep them in a Georgian portable writing desk. It sort of feels like the perfect metaphor for me. But I think it is time to what to do with all the stitched things I have made in the past year in. Very occasionally I turn things into cushions or cards, or give them away but I have no idea what to do with this lot. Answers on a postcard please?

It's a glorious day that starts with a new Frances Hardinge book: UNRAVELLER. The way she world-builds is like few other authors I know: effortless, as if she doesn't much mind whether you know what's going on (although she makes sure you can figure it out.) It's fantasy & reminds me of NEVERMOOR, but it's instead of . I'm in love again.
