Earlier this week I walked in their footsteps again at Dartington Hall.
This view may not have looked that different in 1573 - kitchen and hall as now. But the arches? Remains of windows in buildings in second courtyard that Emery suggests dates from John Holand’s time (c1390s) not part of Sir Arthur Champernowne’s sixteenth century remodelling.

Oak sourced on the estate provided the new roof for Dartington’s Great Hall in the 192Os. John Holand’s late 14th century version may have been more heavily carved, but architect William Weir’s replacement is impressive #oak #woodensday #devon #medieval #amwriting #writersresearch

This unusual vessel from Dartington Hall @DartingtonTrust now on display @RAMMuseum Exeter is dated 1600-1700. Probably too late for the late 16th century occupants of the hall I’m researching to have held it. But you never know. #glass #writersresearch
