This is part of the problem of the myth of “universal appeal”. I say myth because there is no way to get that. You can get broad appeal but even then, what audience are you targeting? It’s like that quote about the relatability being in the details says.

Ridiculous thing I like to do when I'm feeling discouraged as a writer: I go look up my books at my local library 's website and see how many copies are checked out. Even if it's just one [and it's always at least one] I feel encouraged.
