"Hanging a lantern on it" is NOT cheating, but rather asking your reader to let go of their preconceived ideas and enjoy the story as you've presented it. It's a valuable tool to have in a writer's toolbox.

: When you plan your , record the motivations of your characters. When you finish your draft, go back and check to see if your characters still have those motivations. Maybe you had some inspiration and the plot changed, and so your characters' actions had to change. If that happened, you may need to clarify their motivations too.

What drives your characters is a huge part of what makes readers care about them and keep turning pages.

In sections of fast action, keep decriptions sparse and brief. Use verbs rather than adjectives, and focus on sounds rather than sights.

Examples:
'The door splintered with a crash.'
'Tyres screeched on the asphalt.'

BTW, I'm totally in LOOURVE with the Zoom transcribe feature, even though it's only about 97% accurate. It's saving me SO MUCH TIME and frustration with my interviews. AND, get this... *whispers* you can use it to transcribe existing videos too!

Basically I set up a Zoom session with just me. I turn on Captions. Then I click start on the video and walk away from the computer. Come back, save the transcript, and it's done. Easiest and cheapest and most accurate option I've found.

If you’re a , the reverse process of creating a metaphor works similarly. And often without effort. This is why before I said that sometimes metaphors in stories are intentional, and sometimes not. In my own work, I often don’t notice a metaphor until I’m well into the work, or even finished. If I’m trained to recognize it, I can edit the work to reinforce the accidental meanings. Because when I’m consuming a story, I like a good metaphor, but I LOVE a great metaphor, and that happens when the writer at some point realizes what’s up and fine-tunes it.

: Start with the end in mind. That means planning before writing so you know where you want to end up. When you know where you want to go, it's a lot easier to get there.

: If you are going to have the endnotes for your professional paper compiled by an automated system, read them afterward to make sure no nonsense has snuck in.

If you find yourself reaching for the words smiled, nodded, stood, paused, took in and let out a deep breath in your dialogue, it’s a sign your characters need to be doing something while they talk. Let them smoke a cigar. Go grocery shopping. Observe what is happening around them. Anything but smiling, nodding, pausing, and breathing, lest you want a snooze fest on your page.

Finding the right for your is not a simple matter of saying, "You'll do." You need to do your homework. Here is a list of questions that you should be able to answer when contracting editors to work on your manuscripts.

: When you sit down to start a new chapter in your , reread the end of the previous chapter to remind yourself what was the last thing you told your reader. Then be sure to fill in whatever essential background may have happened between chapters. You don't have to start with background, but you do need to connect the dots at some point and usually pretty early.

On your first read-through, try to be a reader, not a writer. Note generalities: pacing, wording, etc. then move on.

If you could choose only one single good thing that could come from publishing your novel, what is it, right now?

For anyone on the querying and publishing journey, my new is out: "When a Book Goes to Auction: Editorial Meetings," which explores a few writers' experiences with a Big Five book auction and shares insight on finding your vision of your story in the world.
