'Stuart Willis talks to philosopher swordsperson Damon Young about how they have applied the lessons they’ve learnt from historical European martial arts (HEMA) to screenwriting. It might sound a bit niche if you don’t write about people hitting each other – or in my case, aliens – with swords, but I promise you that it’s a fascinating listen.'

Thanks to @suw for the shout-out. chocolateandvodka.com/2023/06/

Use hard line breaks for scene transitions only when necessary, not to bridge short distances or gaps in time. Keep your reader in the scene.

Beware coincidence that helps your protagonist along the path to their goal.

I’m working on a project where I know the story has to start with the death of the teenage protagonist who has lost their identity and short-term memory.

Is this a no win scenario for the opening of a novel-length project? Am I delusional to think I can pull it off as a newer writer? Is there advice or perspective here on ways to make it the death matter both to character and reader? Other considerations? I’m feeling overwhelmed by this impossible mountain of a problem.

(Bad cont.)

- can you change POVs within a book? dunno man that sounds too wild
- characters must be relatable and likeable and friendable
- readers are obligated a happy ending
- there's absolutely nothing to be gained from reading classical literature from any culture. If the author is dead, they're irrelevant, move on.
- all events in the story must be a result of the protagonist's actions (???? as if this happens in life ???)

and it doesn't end there oh my fucking god

I had to keep pausing this episode every 10 minutes because I couldn't deal. They're unearthing bad from Twitter and Reddit and oh lord it is really fucking bad.

kittysneezes.com/more-bad-writ

Lowlights include

- don't use "said" because it's repetitive
- to be a good writer you don't need to read books because that's ableist
- a Sanderson-style rational magic system is necessary if you're going to write about magic

2. Road Trip
3. Gotta Sing, Dance, Sport, etc.
4. Rag-Tag Rebels (Scrappy Underdogs)
5. Killing Nazis (Righteous Revenge)
6. Rags to Riches

Came across this, and thought it could be helpful for fellow writers. It chats about how to create an em-dash(key shortcuts and such), and when to use them.

I find the "show not tell" to be very much along the lines of "don't sell the sausage, sell the sizzle!" But boy oh boy, at the end for both, you actually have to produce a sausage or you're going to anger some people.

This gnomic / potentially oo-err-missus crafting advice brought to you by the flu that just won't quit and the stifling of the urge to shout in editing comments.

Has anyone had success (or seen examples of) sequential series on Medium? I want to do the first pass of something I may expand into a book, but want to kick the tires via Medium first.
