#Smallpress #writingcareer Add to that list, the amorphous quality of “hustle.” Opportunities come and go, often very quickly. They may be doors that open because of hard work you have done, those that a mentor helps you open, those that an editor or publisher either opens for you or assists with, combinations thereof. Sometimes you’re just in exactly the right spot at the right time. The savvier you are about why that door opened and what you can do to get through it, the better.
#smallpress #writingcareer Added to that are more nebulous things like “being good to work with.” It is a small field, at least for sfnal work, so word does get around. I used to do contract archeology on construction sites and the way you found out about new opportunities was entirely by word of mouth. Piss enough people off and people were less inclined to be helpful until you gradually got shut out of gigs.
#smallpress #writingcareer Can you make the jump without all of this? Possibly. But that gets into “luck” and “good fortune,” which you have little control over. Again: this is about working your way upward so all of this is about the visibility and viability of your existing and previous work. Things that look like you’re stalled, such as long periods between books, no other publications over an extended period, etc. make it that much less likely that you will be “lucky.” Just saying.
Couple of quick thoughts on building your #writingcareer via the #smallpress, assuming the goal is use that as a stepping stone to the medium-sized/Big 4.5 presses - do you have the following: a consistent publication record that shows that you are leveling up? Award track record (this does have to be bigger and better known awards, alas)? Frequency of reviews/fannish attention that suggests a growing fan base? Reach (growing network and visibility)? At least one completed novel?
Tiffany Yates Martin, author of Intuitive Editing: A Creative & Practical Guide to Revising Your Writing, has a great post today on her Fox Print Editorial blog.
Blurb: "Why other people's writing advice may not work for you, and how to forge your own author career."

I've attended several of Tiffany's webinars. I love her common sense & thoughtful approach. Highly recommend this post & her book!
